Laughing in the Wind items

Contents

The items of Laughing in the Wind reflect the novel’s themes of political intrigue, martial arts rivalry, and the corrupting pursuit of power. At the center stands the Sunflower Manual — the most dangerous martial arts text in Jin Yong’s universe, requiring self-castration to practice — and its derivative, the Bixie Swordplay Manual. These manuals drive the ambitions of villains like Yue Buqun and Lin Pingzhi, while Linghu Chong’s journey brings him into contact with the legendary Nine Jians of Dugu and the healing power of the Tendon-Transmuting Sutra.

Cross-novel connections

Laughing in the Wind exists in a later era than the Condor Trilogy but contains echoes of earlier works:

  • Nine Yin Manual — Referenced in the novel’s martial arts lineage, though no longer the central focus
  • Tendon-Transmuting Sutra — Shaolin’s supreme manual, also appearing in Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils and The Heavenly Sword and the Dragon Sabre
  • Dugu Qiubai’s legacy — The Nine Jians of Dugu connect to the sword saint mentioned in earlier novels
  • Beggars’ Guild techniques — Though not central to this novel, the Guild’s legacy continues from the Condor Trilogy

Footnotes

  1. 辟邪剑 – Bìxié Jiàn. “Evil-warding sword” — the name ironically reflects the corrupting influence of the Bixie Swordplay Manual, which demands self-castration as the price for its power. ↩

  2. 葵花宝典 – Kuíhuā Bǎodiǎn. “Sunflower Manual” — the opening line “欲练神功，引刀自宫” (“To practice this divine art, one must cut oneself”) has become one of Jin Yong’s most famous phrases. The manual’s influence spreads across multiple martial schools. ↩
