The world of Laughing in the Wind presents a deliberately ambiguous historical setting where political allegory takes precedence over specific time periods. The story’s factions reflect eternal power struggles: the orthodox Five Mountains Sword Alliance seeks unity under Songshan School’s domination, whilst the heterodox Sun Moon Holy Order pursues its own vision of martial arts supremacy. These conflicts explore themes of corruption, authenticity, and the price of political ambition.

Notable factions

Five Mountains Sword Alliance

The Five Mountains Sword Alliance (五岳剑派联盟 – Wǔyuè Jiànpài Liánméng) represented the orthodox martial arts establishment, comprising five major sword schools each based on one of China’s sacred mountains. Led by ambitious figures like Zuo Lengchan of Songshan School, the alliance ostensibly promoted mutual cooperation but concealed deep internal power struggles.

Yue Buqun of Huashan School epitomised the corruption within orthodox factions, maintaining a facade of righteousness whilst pursuing personal ambitions through increasingly desperate means.

Sun Moon Holy Order

The Sun Moon Holy Order (日月神教 – Rìyuè Shénjiào) served as the primary heterodox faction, led by charismatic but tyrannical leaders like Ren Woxing and later Dongfang Bubai. Despite their reputation for evil, individual members often displayed more genuine human emotion than their orthodox counterparts.

The Order’s internal power struggles and succession crises paralleled those within orthodox factions, suggesting that corruption was endemic to organised power regardless of moral pretensions.
