The Yellow Dress Maiden (simplified: 黄衫女子, traditional: 黃衫女子, pinyin: Huángshān Nǚzǐ, jyutping: wong4 saam1 neoi5 zi2) was a mysterious martial artist who appeared twice in The Heavenly Sword and the Dragon Sabre. She was a descendant of Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü, the Divine Condor Heroes, and lived in seclusion at Mount Zhongnan (终南山) in the Ancient Tomb (活死人墓). She helped expose the Beggars’ Guild impersonator scheme and assisted Zhang Wuji at the Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly by defeating Zhou Zhiruo.
Biography
Background and identity
The Yellow Dress Maiden was a descendant of Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü, the Divine Condor Heroes, who had lived in seclusion at Mount Zhongnan after the end of The Return of the Condor Heroes. She lived in the Ancient Tomb and had mastered the techniques of the Ancient Tomb School, including the Nine Yin Manual.
She was described as being about twenty-six or twenty-seven years old, graceful and extremely beautiful, though her face was very pale, almost without any colour. She was accompanied by eight female attendants who played musical instruments (qin and xiao).
Her true name was never revealed in the novel. Shi Hongshi (史红石) called her “Sister Yang” (杨姊姊), indicating that her surname was Yang, confirming her descent from Yang Guo.
Helping the Beggars’ Guild
After Shi Huolong, the leader of the Beggars’ Guild, was killed by Cheng Kun, his wife and daughter Shi Hongshi travelled to Mount Zhongnan to seek help from the Yellow Dress Maiden, as Shi Huolong had instructed before his death. The Yellow Dress Maiden, recognising the relationship between her ancestors and the Beggars’ Guild, agreed to help.
The Yellow Dress Maiden brought Shi Hongshi, who was holding the Dog-beating Staff (打狗棒), to the Beggars’ Guild headquarters to expose the impersonator who had taken control of the guild. She had previously intercepted a letter sent by the Beggars’ Guild’s Staff Master (掌棒龙头), exposing Wei Yixiao’s plan to insult the Beggars’ Guild.
When she arrived, she found Zhang Wuji at the Beggars’ Guild headquarters, where he had captured the false Shi Huolong. She addressed Zhang Wuji with the tone of an older sister: “Elder Brother Zhang, you’re not young anymore. Why are you doing such childish things instead of serious matters?” Her words were slightly reproachful but affectionate, like an older sister teaching a younger brother.
She then helped expose the impersonator scheme orchestrated by Cheng Kun and Chen Youliang, allowing Shi Hongshi to succeed her father as guild leader. After ensuring that Shi Hongshi would be taken care of by the guild elders, the Yellow Dress Maiden left.
The Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly
At the Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly (屠狮英雄会), the Yellow Dress Maiden appeared again to help Zhang Wuji. When Zhang Wuji was fighting the Three Elders of Bodhidharma Hall (渡字辈三僧) in the Diamond Vajra Array (金刚伏魔圈) to rescue Xie Xun, Zhou Zhiruo seized Xie Xun and attempted to use him as leverage.
Zhou Dian, one of the Five Wanderers, attempted to commit suicide to disrupt the Three Elders’ concentration and help Zhang Wuji. The Yellow Dress Maiden, observing from nearby, flew to Zhou Dian’s side and prevented his suicide, demonstrating her exceptional lightness skill.
She then fought Zhou Zhiruo, who was using the Nine Yin White Bone Claw (九阴白骨爪). Although both were using techniques from the Nine Yin Manual, the Yellow Dress Maiden’s internal energy was far superior to Zhou Zhiruo’s. The Yellow Dress Maiden’s techniques were described as “floating and agile, changing unpredictably, but proper and not evil in her movements” (飘忽灵动,变幻无方,但举手抬足之间却正而不邪), while Zhou Zhiruo’s techniques were described as ghostly and sinister. The Yellow Dress Maiden appeared like an immortal, while Zhou Zhiruo appeared like a demon.
Within dozens of moves, the Yellow Dress Maiden defeated Zhou Zhiruo. She then used the Nine Yin White Bone Claw to force Zhou Zhiruo to confess that she had stolen the Dragon-slaying Sabre and Heavenly Sword, and informed Zhang Wuji that the weapons were on the island where they had been before.
Protecting Xie Xun
After Cheng Kun was exposed and Xie Xun had taken his revenge, Xie Xun chose to remain at Shaolin Temple and accept any revenge from those he had wronged. When Jingzhao, an Emei Order nun, attempted to kill Xie Xun using a date pit acupoint strike (枣核钉) as a sneak attack, the Yellow Dress Maiden intercepted it, catching the date pit in her sleeve.
She questioned Jingzhao about her relationship with Xie Xun, and when Jingzhao could not answer, the Yellow Dress Maiden exposed that Jingzhao and several other Jing-generation nuns were unmarried when they became nuns, meaning they had no husband to avenge. She stated that while Xie Xun was willing to accept legitimate revenge from victims’ families, she would not allow anyone to take advantage of the situation for their own purposes.
Revealing her identity
When Zhang Wuji asked the Yellow Dress Maiden for her name, she replied with a poem: “Behind Mount Zhongnan, in the Ancient Tomb; the Divine Condor Heroes, disappeared from the jianghu” (终南山后,活死人墓;神雕侠侣,绝迹江湖). This confirmed her identity as a descendant of Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü.
She then left with her eight attendants, never appearing again in the novel.
