Lin Zhennan

Lin Zhennan (simplified: 林震南, traditional: 林震南, pinyin: Lín Zhènnán, jyutping: lam4 zan3 naam4) was the chief escort of the Fuwei Armed Escort in Fuzhou and the father of Lin Pingzhi. His name means “Quells the South.” He was a descendant of Lin Yuantu, the founder of the escort agency, but unlike his great-grandfather, Lin Zhennan’s martial arts were weak, and he relied on business acumen rather than martial prowess to maintain the escort’s reputation.

Biography

Early life and business success

Lin Zhennan inherited the Fuwei Armed Escort from his ancestors and successfully expanded its operations through business skill rather than martial arts ability. He married the daughter of Wang Yuanba, leader of the Golden Blade School in Luoyang, strengthening his connections in the jianghu.

He was proud of his business achievements and often boasted to his son about his understanding of the jianghu, believing that relationships and reputation were more important than martial arts skill. He taught Lin Pingzhi that the key to success was maintaining good relationships with various factions and understanding the business side of the escort trade.

The massacre

Lin Zhennan’s life was destroyed when Yu Canghai, leader of the Qingcheng School, launched a campaign to acquire the Evil-Warding Sword Manual. The Qingcheng School systematically killed all the escort members, one by one, in a terrifying campaign of intimidation.

Lin Zhennan initially believed the attacks were from bandits or business rivals, but when he discovered that his attackers were using his family’s own Evil-Warding Swordplay, he realised the true nature of the threat. He and his wife fled with Lin Pingzhi, but were eventually captured by Yu Canghai.

Death and final message

Lin Zhennan and his wife were tortured by Yu Canghai in an attempt to learn the location of the Evil-Warding Sword Manual. Before dying, Lin Zhennan managed to pass a message to Linghu Chong, asking him to tell Lin Pingzhi: “The ancestral items in the old house on Xiangyang Lane must not be casually examined.” This message referred to the true Evil-Warding Sword Manual hidden in the Lin family’s ancestral home.

Lin Zhennan died without knowing that Yue Buqun had already taken Lin Pingzhi as a disciple, believing that his son would be safe and could eventually learn the true swordplay to avenge the family.

Personality & traits

Lin Zhennan was portrayed as a successful businessman who overestimated his understanding of the jianghu. He believed that relationships and reputation were sufficient protection, not realising that in the martial arts world, power ultimately comes from strength. His character demonstrates the danger of complacency and the importance of maintaining martial arts ability in a dangerous world.

He was described as speaking boastfully and with self-satisfaction when teaching his son about the jianghu, demonstrating a frog-in-a-well mentality—someone who had seen only a small part of the world but believed he understood everything.

Martial arts abilities

Lin Zhennan’s martial arts were weak, far inferior to his great-grandfather Lin Yuantu’s legendary abilities. He practiced a fake version of the Evil-Warding Swordplay that lacked the true technique’s power and speed. This weakness made him and his family vulnerable to attack from martial artists who coveted the true sword manual.

Relationships

Lin Zhennan’s relationship with his son Lin Pingzhi was one of deep paternal love. He tried to teach Lin Pingzhi about the jianghu and prepare him to take over the escort business, though his teachings were based on business principles rather than martial arts mastery.

His relationship with his wife, Madam Wang, was one of mutual support. The two died together, refusing to reveal the location of the sword manual even under torture.

His relationship with Wang Yuanba, his father-in-law, was one of alliance through marriage, connecting the Fuwei Armed Escort with the Golden Blade School.

Behind the scenes

Lin Zhennan represents the danger of relying on reputation and relationships without maintaining the martial arts ability to back them up. His character demonstrates that in the jianghu, power ultimately comes from strength, and those who forget this lesson pay a terrible price.

Literary significance

Lin Zhennan’s story serves as the opening tragedy of the novel, setting in motion Lin Pingzhi’s journey of revenge and the larger plot involving the Evil-Warding Sword Manual. His death demonstrates the brutal reality of the jianghu, where even successful businessmen are not safe from martial artists who covet their secrets.
