Ban Shuxian (simplified: 班淑娴, traditional: 班淑嫻, pinyin: Bān Shūxián, jyutping: baan1 suk6 jin4) was the wife of He Taichong, leader of the Kunlun School. She was He Taichong’s senior fellow disciple, two years his elder, and wielded significant power within the school. Her martial skill was on par with her husband’s, and she was often described as the school’s de facto co-ruler.
Biography
Rise to power
Ban Shuxian and He Taichong studied under Bailuzi (白鹿子), who died without naming a successor. The disciples contended for the leadership. Ban Shuxian backed He Taichong, and together they prevailed. He Taichong became leader of the Kunlun School and married Ban Shuxian out of gratitude.
Marriage and rivalry
As they aged, Ban Shuxian looked much older than He Taichong. He Taichong took several concubines, citing the need for an heir. Ban Shuxian remained dominant through decades of authority and He Taichong’s guilt. She was jealous of the fifth concubine, Wugu, and secretly poisoned her, disfiguring her face. When Zhang Wuji cured Wugu, Ban Shuxian forced He Taichong to serve Zhang Wuji poisoned wine; Zhang Wuji survived after Yang Buhui intervened.
Temple Conference and death
Before the Temple Conference, Ban Shuxian and He Taichong attempted to seize Xie Xun and the Dragon-Slaying Sabre at Shaolin. In the original edition they died fighting the three Shaolin elders’ Diamond Buddha Subduing Formation. In the revised edition they were killed by Cheng Kun’s ambush.
Personality and traits
Ban Shuxian was fierce, domineering, and vindictive. She kept He Taichong in check through a mix of past favours and fear. Her relationship with He Taichong resembled that of Gongsun Zhi and Qiu Qianchi—a wife with leverage over her husband—though their conflict never reached the same extreme.
Martial arts
Ban Shuxian was skilled in the Two Forms Swordplay (两仪剑法) and fought alongside He Taichong as a pair.
