Song Qingshu (simplified: 宋青书, traditional: 宋青書, pinyin: Sòng Qīngshū, jyutping: sung3 cing1 syu1), also known by the nickname Jade-Faced Mengchang (玉面孟尝), was the son of Song Yuanqiao and the most outstanding third-generation disciple of the Wudang Order. Despite his talent and promising future, his jealousy, ambition, and moral corruption led him to betray the Wudang Order, culminating in the murder of Mo Shenggu and his eventual execution.
Biography
Early life and promising start
Song Qingshu was born into privilege as the son of Song Yuanqiao, the most senior disciple of Zhang Sanfeng and the de facto leader of the Wudang Order. From birth, he was groomed to be the future successor to Wudang Order leadership, receiving instruction from both Zhang Sanfeng and his father.
Song Qingshu was exceptionally handsome, earning him the nickname “Jade-Faced Mengchang,” referencing the famous historical figure Meng Changjun (孟尝君), known for his good looks and hospitality. His appearance, combined with his martial arts talent, made him a prominent figure among the third-generation disciples of the Wudang Order.
Exceptional martial arts talent
Among the Wudang Order’s third-generation disciples, Song Qingshu was recognised as the most outstanding martial artist. His natural talent and privileged upbringing allowed him to develop exceptional skills, making him a promising candidate for future leadership. He was respected and admired by many within the Order, and his future seemed bright.
Infatuation with Zhou Zhiruo
Song Qingshu developed strong feelings for Zhou Zhiruo, a disciple of the Emei Order who was known for her beauty and martial arts abilities. However, Zhou Zhiruo was in love with Zhang Wuji, the Ming Order leader and nephew of the Wudang Seven Xias.
This unrequited love created deep jealousy and resentment in Song Qingshu. He became obsessed with Zhou Zhiruo and grew to hate Zhang Wuji, whom he saw as his rival for her affections. This jealousy would ultimately drive him down a dark path.
Spying on Emei Order disciples
Song Qingshu’s obsession with Zhou Zhiruo led him to commit a serious violation of martial arts ethics. He secretly spied on the Emei Order’s female disciples, an act that violated the principles of proper conduct and honour that the Wudang Order stood for.
When Mo Shenggu, the youngest of the Seven Xias, discovered Song Qingshu’s misconduct, he confronted him about it. Song Qingshu, afraid of being exposed and punished, made a fateful decision that would seal his doom.
Murder of Mo Shenggu
Fearing that Mo Shenggu would expose his wrongdoing and subject him to punishment, Song Qingshu conspired with Chen Youliang, a member of the Beggars’ Guild who had been manipulating Song Qingshu for his own purposes. Together, they ambushed and killed Mo Shenggu.
This act marked Song Qingshu as a traitor to the Wudang Order. He had committed the ultimate sin—killing his own martial uncle—a violation of the most fundamental principles of martial arts hierarchy and respect. This betrayal devastated Song Yuanqiao and the entire Wudang Order.
Manipulation by Chen Youliang
After killing Mo Shenggu, Song Qingshu became increasingly controlled by Chen Youliang, who used Song Qingshu’s crime to manipulate him. Chen Youliang threatened to expose Song Qingshu’s murder of Mo Shenggu, forcing him to comply with various schemes, including plans to poison Zhang Sanfeng and the other Wudang leaders.
Song Qingshu’s descent into treachery accelerated under Chen Youliang’s manipulation. He became increasingly isolated from his family and the Wudang Order, trapped by his crimes and unable to escape the web of deception and betrayal he had entered.
Learning Nine Yin White Bone Claw
At some point, Song Qingshu learned the Nine Yin White Bone Claw (九阴白骨爪), a powerful but sinister technique from the Nine Yin Manual. It is unclear exactly how he learned this technique, though it may have been from Zhou Zhiruo, who had also mastered it after becoming the Emei Order leader.
This technique, while powerful, reflected the dark path Song Qingshu had chosen. The Nine Yin White Bone Claw was known for its deadly effectiveness but also its association with evil practitioners.
The Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly
At the Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly (屠狮英雄会), Song Qingshu fought against Yu Lianzhou, the second of the Seven Xias, who had come to avenge Mo Shenggu’s death. Despite Song Qingshu’s skills, Yu Lianzhou’s mastery of Taiji Fist proved superior.
Yu Lianzhou defeated Song Qingshu decisively, breaking both of his arms and using the Twin Winds Through Ears (双风贯耳) technique to shatter his skull, leaving him crippled. This act of vengeance demonstrated the Wudang Order’s determination to punish traitors and honour Mo Shenggu’s memory.
Execution by Zhang Sanfeng
After being severely wounded by Yu Lianzhou, Song Qingshu was brought back to Mount Wudang. Song Yuanqiao, overcome with grief and conflicting emotions between fatherly love and fraternal duty, drew his sword to kill his unfilial son. However, when he saw Song Qingshu’s bandaged head, he could not bring himself to strike, and instead attempted to take his own life but was stopped.
Zhang Sanfeng, recognising the gravity of the situation and the need to maintain the Order’s principles, personally executed Song Qingshu with a single palm strike to the chest, shattering his internal organs and killing him instantly. This act of execution demonstrated Zhang Sanfeng’s commitment to justice and the maintenance of the Order’s integrity, even at great personal cost.
Personality & traits
Jealousy and ambition
Song Qingshu’s character was fundamentally flawed by deep jealousy and ambition. His unrequited love for Zhou Zhiruo and his resentment of Zhang Wuji drove him to commit increasingly serious crimes. He was unable to accept that Zhou Zhiruo did not return his feelings and allowed his jealousy to consume him.
Moral corruption
Despite being raised in a righteous environment with excellent role models, Song Qingshu’s character became corrupted. His privileged upbringing may have contributed to his sense of entitlement and his belief that he deserved what he wanted, regardless of the cost to others or the principles he was supposed to uphold.
Weakness and manipulation
Song Qingshu’s weak character made him vulnerable to manipulation. Once he committed his first serious crime, he became trapped in a cycle of betrayal and manipulation by Chen Youliang, unable to break free from the consequences of his actions.
Fear and desperation
Song Qingshu’s actions were driven in part by fear—fear of exposure, fear of punishment, and fear of losing his status and privileges. However, his attempts to cover up his crimes only led him deeper into treachery and further from redemption.
Martial arts abilities
Wudang martial arts
As the most outstanding third-generation disciple of the Wudang Order, Song Qingshu possessed considerable martial arts abilities. His training under his father Song Yuanqiao and Zhang Sanfeng gave him a solid foundation in Wudang techniques, including swordplay and internal energy cultivation.
Nine Yin White Bone Claw
Song Qingshu learned the Nine Yin White Bone Claw, a powerful technique from the Nine Yin Manual. This technique was deadly and effective, capable of inflicting serious injuries with its claw-like strikes. However, despite the power of this technique, Song Qingshu was ultimately defeated by Yu Lianzhou’s superior mastery of Taiji Fist.
Relationships
Song Yuanqiao
Song Qingshu’s relationship with his father Song Yuanqiao was both his greatest advantage and his greatest tragedy. Song Yuanqiao had placed all his hopes for the future on his son, grooming him to be the next leader of the Wudang Order. Song Qingshu’s betrayal and eventual death devastated Song Yuanqiao, who was removed from consideration for leadership as a result of his son’s actions.
Zhang Sanfeng
Song Qingshu had been personally instructed by Zhang Sanfeng, who had high hopes for his future. However, Zhang Sanfeng ultimately had to execute Song Qingshu for his crimes, demonstrating that even the most promising disciples could fall if they did not maintain their moral principles.
Zhou Zhiruo
Song Qingshu’s infatuation with Zhou Zhiruo was the driving force behind much of his downfall. His unrequited love for her and his jealousy of Zhang Wuji led him to commit increasingly serious crimes, ultimately destroying his life and reputation.
Chen Youliang
Song Qingshu’s relationship with Chen Youliang was one of manipulation and exploitation. Chen Youliang used Song Qingshu’s crimes to control him, forcing him to participate in schemes that further corrupted his character and isolated him from the Wudang Order.
Behind the scenes
Song Qingshu represents a cautionary tale about the corrupting influence of jealousy, ambition, and moral weakness. His character demonstrates how even the most promising individuals can fall if they do not maintain their principles and allow negative emotions to consume them.
His story serves as a contrast to the righteous characters in the novel, showing how privilege and talent are not enough without moral character. His privileged upbringing, combined with his weak character, created a perfect storm that led to his destruction.
Song Qingshu’s betrayal of the Wudang Order and his murder of Mo Shenggu represent one of the most tragic events in the novel, demonstrating the real consequences of moral corruption and the importance of maintaining principles even in the face of personal desires.
The character’s name “Qingshu” (青书) combines “qing” (青), meaning “green” or “young,” and “shu” (书), meaning “book” or “writing.” This name could symbolise youth and learning, but Song Qingshu’s actions demonstrated that education and talent without moral character lead to destruction.
