Chen Youliang

Chen Youliang (simplified: 陈友谅, traditional: 陳友諒, pinyin: Chén Yǒuliàng, jyutping: can4 jau5 loeng6) was a historical figure who appeared in the novel as a disciple of Cheng Kun and member of the Beggars’ Guild. He was cunning and treacherous, scheming against Zhang Wuji and later betraying the Ming Order to establish his own regime.

Biography

Beggars’ Guild and scheming

Chen Youliang joined the Beggars’ Guild and became a disciple of Cheng Kun, who was secretly working for the Mongols. Chen Youliang participated in Cheng Kun’s plots against Zhang Wuji and the Ming Order. He was involved in the scheme to frame Song Qingshu for the murder of Mo Shenggu, using this to manipulate Song Qingshu into betraying the Wudang Order.

Betrayal and death

After Cheng Kun was captured, Chen Youliang fled and joined Xu Shouhui’s forces, using Xu Shouhui’s protection to avoid Zhang Wuji’s retribution. He later killed Xu Shouhui and established his own regime, leading to years of civil war within the Ming Order’s forces. In history, Chen Youliang died in the Battle of Lake Poyang (1363) when struck by an arrow through the head.

Chen Youliang was treacherous, ambitious, and skilled in manipulation. He used others for his own ends and was willing to betray allies to achieve power.

Chen Youliang (1320–1363) was a real historical figure, a rebel leader during the late Yuan dynasty who established the Chen Han regime. He was one of Zhu Yuanzhang’s main rivals in the struggle for control of China.
