Ma Fatong (simplified: 马法通, traditional: 馬法通, pinyin: Mǎ Fǎtōng, jyutping: maa5 faat3 tung1) was one of the Qinghai Three Swords who attempted to infiltrate Shaolin Temple to find Xie Xun and obtain the Dragon Sabre, but was killed by the Three Elders of Bodhidharma Hall.
Biography
Background
Ma Fatong was a disciple of the Qinghai School, residing at Qinghai Yuzhen Temple (青海玉真观). He formed a fixed group known as the “Qinghai Three Swords” (青海三剑) with Shao He and Shao Yan.
Feud with Du Baitang and Yi Sanniang
Ma Fatong and his companions had a feud with Du Baitang and Yi Sanniang over a minor incident many years earlier. They traveled from western Sichuan to Mount Shaolin to seek revenge against the couple.
Discovery of common purpose
When the Qinghai Three Swords encountered Du Baitang and Yi Sanniang, they discovered that both groups had developed martial arts techniques specifically designed to counter Xie Xun’s Seven Injuries Fist (七伤拳). They realized they had a common enemy and stopped fighting.
Alliance
The two groups formed an alliance: Du Baitang and Yi Sanniang would kill Xie Xun to avenge their son’s death, while the Qinghai Three Swords would obtain the Dragon Sabre. The five made a pact and swore a poisonous oath.
Infiltration of Shaolin Temple
The Qinghai Three Swords attempted to infiltrate Shaolin Temple alone to find Xie Xun. They encountered three monks armed with precept knives and engaged in battle. The three swordsmen initially used a “False Three Talents Formation” (假三才阵) against the Shaolin monks, but the formation was broken and they were ultimately defeated.
Death
Ma Fatong was killed by the Shaolin monks during the battle. His body, along with those of Shao He and Shao Yan, was taken back to the temple by the monks.
Personality and traits
Ma Fatong was determined to obtain the Dragon Sabre and was willing to take risks to achieve his goal. He was skilled in Qinghai School sword techniques, which Xie Xun had once praised as having “unique secrets” despite being from a remote western region.
