Biography
Early Life and Martial Arts Training
Lu Zhanyuan came from a respectable martial arts family and received standard training in conventional fighting techniques. His abilities were competent but not exceptional, making him a typical representative of the middle ranks of the jianghu rather than a figure of great renown or power.
His name “Zhanyuan” (展元) suggests “expanding origins” or “developing foundations,” which proved ironically prophetic given how his actions would have far-reaching consequences that extended far beyond his original intentions or understanding.
Meeting Li Mochou
His fateful encounter with Li Mochou occurred when she was still a disciple of the Ancient Tomb School, before her transformation into the Scarlet Serpent Fairy. At that time, Li Mochou was known for her kindness, beauty, and exceptional martial arts abilities, making her an attractive partner for any young martial artist.
The Great Betrayal

His decision to abandon Li Mochou in favour of an arranged marriage created one of the story’s most tragic and far-reaching consequences.
His betrayal demonstrated how individual moral failures could have cascading effects that destroyed multiple lives and created ongoing cycles of violence and revenge.
Family Consequences

Catalyst for Tragedy
Lu Zhanyuan’s role as a catalyst for tragedy extended beyond his immediate family to affect characters like Yang Guo, Xiaolongnü, and others who would encounter Li Mochou throughout her career of revenge. His single act of betrayal created ripple effects that influenced many of the story’s major events.
