He Yuanjun (simplified: 何沅君, traditional: 何沅君, pinyin: Hé Yuánjūn, jyutping: ho4 jyun4 gwan1) was the wife of Lu Zhanyuan, whose arranged marriage became an unwitting catalyst for a tragic transformation. Though she bore no personal responsibility for Li Mochou’s suffering, her marriage to Lu Zhanyuan represented the social conventions that led to Li Mochou’s betrayal and subsequent transformation into the vengeful Scarlet Serpent Fairy.
Biography
Family and Social Position
He Yuanjun came from a respectable family that was considered suitable for an arranged marriage alliance with the Lu family. Her background reflected the social conventions of the time, when marriages were often arranged for family benefit rather than personal affection, and women had limited control over their marital destinies.
Her name “Yuanjun” (沅君) combines “Yuan” (沅), referring to the Yuan River, with “Jun” (君), meaning ruler or gentleman, suggesting both geographical connections and social aspirations that made her family’s alliance with the Lu clan advantageous for both parties.
Arranged Marriage
Her marriage to Lu Zhanyuan was arranged by their respective families according to conventional social practices of the time. This arrangement, while normal and acceptable by contemporary standards, became the mechanism through which Lu Zhanyuan abandoned his commitment to Li Mochou, creating tragic consequences that neither He Yuanjun nor her family could have anticipated.
Unwitting Catalyst
He Yuanjun’s most significant role in the narrative was as an unwitting catalyst for Li Mochou’s transformation. Her marriage to Lu Zhanyuan, while personally innocent and socially conventional, became the final act in Li Mochou’s betrayal and the trigger for her transformation into the Scarlet Serpent Fairy.
This role demonstrated how innocent people could become involved in tragic events through no fault of their own, and how social conventions could sometimes create unintended suffering for those outside the conventional arrangements.
Victim of Consequences
As Li Mochou’s revenge against the Lu family unfolded, He Yuanjun became one of the victims of violence that she had done nothing to provoke or deserve. Her fate illustrated how cycles of revenge could harm innocent people who had no involvement in the original conflicts.
Symbol of Social Convention

Her most significant characteristic was her innocence regarding the tragic consequences that her marriage would create. She entered her marriage in good faith, unaware that her husband had abandoned another woman to marry her, and bore no personal responsibility for the suffering that resulted.
Martial arts abilities
He Yuanjun’s martial arts abilities were basic and typical of women from respectable families who received some training for self-defense but were not expected to become serious martial artists.
Basic Self-Defense
Her martial arts training consisted of fundamental techniques sufficient for basic self-protection and maintaining the dignity expected of a woman from her social class. These abilities were practical rather than sophisticated.
Limited Development
Her martial arts development was limited by social expectations that prioritized domestic skills and family responsibilities over advanced combat training. This limitation was typical for women of her background and social position.
