The Five Mountains Sword Alliance (simplified: 五岳剑派, traditional: 五嶽劍派, pinyin: Wǔyuè Jiànpài, jyutping: ng5 joek6 gim3 paai3) was an orthodox martial arts alliance in Laughing in the Wind comprising five major sword schools, each based on one of China’s Five Sacred Mountains. The alliance was dominated by Zuo Lengchan of the Songshan School, who sought to merge the five schools into a single faction under his control.
Overview
The Five Mountains Sword Alliance brought together five orthodox sword schools: the Huashan School (华山派), Songshan School (嵩山派), Taishan School (泰山派), Northern Hengshan School (恒山派), and Southern Hengshan School (衡山派). Each school specialised in sword techniques, hence the name “Five Mountains Sword Alliance.”
The alliance was ostensibly formed for mutual cooperation against heterodox forces such as the Sun Moon Holy Order, but concealed deep internal power struggles. Zuo Lengchan, as alliance leader, pressured the other schools to merge. Yue Buqun of Huashan outwardly opposed the merger whilst secretly pursuing the same goal for himself.
History
The five schools had a shared history of conflict with the Ten Elders of the Sun Moon Order, who had deciphered counter-techniques to each school’s swordplay. The orthodox alliance lured the Ten Elders into a cave on Mount Hua and sealed them inside, though the elders carved their insights onto the cave walls before perishing. These carvings would later be discovered by Linghu Chong during his confinement on Repentance Cliff.
Zuo Lengchan’s ambition to merge the five schools culminated in the Five Mountains Sword Meet, where Yue Buqun ultimately prevailed and became leader of the merged “Five Mountains School.” The alliance subsequently dissolved through internal conflict, with only Mo Da, Linghu Chong, the Northern Hengshan School, and a handful of survivors remaining.
