Shuanger

Shuanger (simplified: 双儿, traditional: 雙兒, pinyin: Shuāngér, jyutping: soeng1 ji4) is one of Wei Xiaobao’s seven wives and his most loyal and trusted companion in The Deer and the Cauldron. Born in September, she is a skilled martial artist known for her gentle temperament, devotion to Wei Xiaobao, and her role as his bodyguard and closest confidante.

Biography

Early life

Shuanger was born in Huzhou (湖州 — Húzhōu) in Jiangnan. Her parents were killed by corrupt officials when she was young, leaving her an orphan. She was taken in by the Zhuang family’s third daughter-in-law, who raised her as a servant.

The Zhuang family had suffered greatly during the “Ming History Case” (明史案 — Míngshǐ Àn), in which Zhuang Tinglong (庄廷鑨 — Zhuāng Tínglóng) was falsely accused by Wu Zhirong (吴之荣 — Wú Zhīróng) and executed under the orders of Oboi (鳌拜).

Meeting Wei Xiaobao

After Wei Xiaobao helped the Kangxi Emperor defeat Oboi, the Zhuang family’s matriarch, Madame Zhuang, was deeply grateful. As a gesture of thanks, she gave Shuanger to Wei Xiaobao as a servant and companion.

From that moment, Shuanger became Wei Xiaobao’s most devoted follower. She proved herself invaluable time and again, saving him from danger and remaining loyal even when others betrayed or abandoned him.

Martial arts and abilities

Shuanger was trained in martial arts by He Tishou (何惕守), also known as He Hongyao (何红药), who was associated with the Huashan School (华山派). Her skills include acupoint striking (点穴 — diǎnxué) techniques and proficiency with weapons such as a long whip and firearms.

Her martial arts abilities make her an effective bodyguard for Wei Xiaobao, and she frequently uses her skills to protect him from various threats throughout their adventures.

Relationship with Wei Xiaobao

Shuanger stands apart from Wei Xiaobao’s other wives through her unconditional loyalty and devotion. While others like Fang Yi deceive him and Princess Jianning attacks him, Shuanger remains consistently faithful and protective.

Wei Xiaobao himself acknowledges that if he were to die, Shuanger would be the one wife who would definitely accompany him, while others might abandon him. This reflects the depth of their bond and her unwavering commitment to him.

Shuanger also becomes sworn siblings with Wu Liuqi (吴六奇), known as the “Iron Beggar,” who is a member of the Heaven and Earth Society (天地会). This relationship further connects her to the anti-Qing resistance movement.

Personality

Shuanger is characterized by her gentle nature, unwavering loyalty, and selfless devotion. Unlike Wei Xiaobao’s other wives, who often have their own agendas or complications, Shuanger’s motivations are simple and pure: to serve and protect Wei Xiaobao.

Her name “Shuanger” (双儿 — literally “twin child”) may refer to her birth month (September, which contains the character 双 in some contexts), but it also reflects her role as Wei Xiaobao’s constant companion—always by his side, never wavering.

Significance

Shuanger represents ideal loyalty and devotion in a world filled with deception and shifting allegiances. Her character provides a stable, trustworthy presence for Wei Xiaobao amidst the chaos of his adventures, serving as both a practical bodyguard and an emotional anchor.

Jin Yong himself has expressed particular fondness for Shuanger, including her among the female characters he would be willing to protect for life, alongside figures like Guo Xiang, Xiao Zhao, and others. This reflects her status as one of the most beloved supporting characters in the novel.

Shuanger’s relationship with Wei Xiaobao demonstrates that genuine affection and loyalty can exist even in a context where relationships are often transactional or complicated, providing a moral center to a story that frequently explores the gray areas of human behavior.
