I’m pleased to introduce a new page dedicated to the literary masters who have shaped the wuxia genre: the Authors page.

This new page provides a central hub to discover and explore the writers whose works have captivated millions of readers and influenced generations of storytellers.

The literary giants

Our authors page currently features five of the most influential wuxia writers:

Jin Yong (金庸)

The titan of modern wuxia fiction, Jin Yong is one of the Three Swordsmen of Wuxia Fiction. His fifteen novels, including The Legend of the Condor Heroes, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, and The Return of the Condor Heroes, have defined the genre with their epic narratives, rich historical settings, and complex characters.

Jin Yong’s works blend martial arts action with deep philosophical questions, historical authenticity, and intricate plot structures that have set the gold standard for wuxia literature.

Gu Long (古龙)

One of the Three Swordsmen alongside Jin Yong, Gu Long revolutionised wuxia fiction in the 1960s and 1970s by introducing modern psychological complexity and Western literary elements. His works, characterised by noir elements, mystery, and poetic prose, brought a new depth to the genre.

Gu Long’s innovative style emphasised psychological complexity and moral ambiguity, establishing a new direction that influenced countless writers who followed.

Liang Yusheng (梁羽生)

The third of the Three Swordsmen, Liang Yusheng brought a scholarly approach to wuxia fiction, enriching the genre with elements of classical Chinese literature, poetry, and history. He is widely regarded as a founding figure who established new standards through his literary sophistication and historical authenticity.

His works are known for their historical accuracy and integration of traditional Chinese cultural elements.

Wang Dulu (王度庐)

One of the Northern Five Masters of wuxia fiction, Wang Dulu is renowned for his tragic romantic wuxia novels, particularly the famous Crane-Iron Series. His work Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was adapted into the Oscar-winning film, introducing his elegant style to a global audience.

We’re currently translating his novel Twin Blades of the Storm Dragon, giving English readers a chance to experience his masterful blend of martial arts action and romantic tragedy.

Shiao Yi (萧逸)

Often mentioned in the phrase “Jin of the South, Shiao of the North,” Shiao Yi is celebrated for his elegant writing style and romantic themes. He was one of the most influential authors of the new school of wuxia fiction and a member of the Five Tigers of the Taiwanese Wuxia Scene.

His works are known for their lyrical prose and exploration of love within the jianghu.
