Chen Jinnan

Chen Jinnan (simplified: 陈近南, traditional: 陳近南, pinyin: Chén Jìnnán, jyutping: can4 gan6 naam4) is the Chief Helmsman (总舵主 — Zǒngduòzhǔ) of the Heaven and Earth Society (天地会 — Tiāndì Huì) and the master of Wei Xiaobao in The Deer and the Cauldron. He is a charismatic and respected leader dedicated to the anti-Qing cause and the restoration of the Ming dynasty.

Biography

Leadership of the Heaven and Earth Society

Chen Jinnan serves as the leader of the Heaven and Earth Society, a secret organization dedicated to overthrowing Qing rule and restoring the Ming dynasty. His authority and charisma command respect from all members of the society, who address him as “Chief Helmsman” (总舵主 — Zǒngduòzhǔ).

Under his leadership, the Heaven and Earth Society maintains an elaborate network of cells throughout China, conducting underground operations while maintaining strict secrecy and loyalty among its diverse membership.

Accepting Wei Xiaobao as a disciple

Chen Jinnan first encounters Wei Xiaobao after the latter’s role in helping the Kangxi Emperor defeat Oboi (鳌拜). Impressed by this achievement, Chen Jinnan faces a dilemma: the Heaven and Earth Society’s Green Wood Lodge (青木堂 — Qīngmù Táng) needed a new leader, but its members were divided over who should assume the position.

To resolve this conflict, Chen Jinnan made an unprecedented decision: he accepted Wei Xiaobao as his personal disciple and appointed him as the leader of the Green Wood Lodge. This move broke with tradition, as Wei Xiaobao had no prior connection to the Heaven and Earth Society and was initially unqualified for such a position.

Chen Jinnan hoped that by making Wei Xiaobao his disciple, he would ensure the young man’s loyalty to the anti-Qing cause while resolving the leadership dispute within the Green Wood Lodge.

Teaching Wei Xiaobao

Despite accepting Wei Xiaobao as his disciple, Chen Jinnan soon discovered that his new student lacked both martial arts talent and dedication. Wei Xiaobao’s laziness and reluctance to practice meant that he never mastered any of the techniques Chen Jinnan attempted to teach him.

Despite this, Chen Jinnan maintained patience with his disciple, recognizing that Wei Xiaobao’s value lay not in martial arts prowess but in his connections and influence within the Qing court.

Death

Chen Jinnan meets his end when he is assassinated by Zheng Keshuang (郑克塽 — Zhèng Kèshuǎng) in a cowardly attack. The murder occurs when Chen Jinnan is vulnerable and unsuspecting, highlighting the treachery that can exist even among those who claim to share common goals.

His death represents a significant turning point in the novel, as it forces Wei Xiaobao to confront the impossibility of maintaining his dual loyalties. With his master gone, Wei Xiaobao must choose between the Heaven and Earth Society and his friendship with the Kangxi Emperor, ultimately choosing neither and retiring from public life.

Personality and traits

Chen Jinnan is characterized by his unwavering dedication to the anti-Qing cause, his charisma, and his sense of justice. He commands respect not only through his martial arts abilities but also through his moral authority and leadership qualities.

Despite his lofty ideals, Chen Jinnan is also pragmatic, as demonstrated by his decision to accept Wei Xiaobao as a disciple despite the young man’s obvious shortcomings. He recognizes that success in their struggle requires flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

Legacy

Chen Jinnan’s death marks a significant loss for the Heaven and Earth Society and represents the end of an era. His assassination by Zheng Keshuang demonstrates the fragility of alliances within the anti-Qing movement and the treachery that can undermine even the noblest causes.

The character of Chen Jinnan is based on the historical figure Chen Yonghua (陈永华 — Chén Yǒnghuá), also known as Chen Yonghua, who served as a military strategist and administrator during the Kingdom of Tungning in Taiwan. In popular culture and legend, Chen Yonghua is often identified as the founder of the Heaven and Earth Society (also known as the Triad Society), which is why Jin Yong chose this name for his character.

Chen Jinnan’s famous line, “Never betray the heavens and earth” (平生不识陈近南,就称英雄也枉然 — “If you don’t know Chen Jinnan in your lifetime, calling yourself a hero is in vain”), reflects his legendary status within the jianghu and the respect he commands among martial artists and rebels alike.
