Wu Qiongyao

Wu Qiongyao

Wu Qiongyao (Chinese: 武琼瑶, pinyin: Wǔ Qióngyáo) is one of the Seven Swords of Mount Tianshan in Liang Yusheng’s Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan (七剑下天山). She is a skilled female martial artist whose dedication to the Tianshan school and its cause of resisting Qing oppression makes her a formidable and respected member of the Seven Swords.

Background

Wu Qiongyao was trained in the martial arts traditions of Tianshan Mountain, studying under the guidance of Hui Ming Chan Shi (晦明禅师) and other masters of the Tianshan school. Like her fellow Swords, she grew up in the isolated and demanding environment of the mountain, which produced warriors of exceptional physical and mental resilience.

Her name, Qiongyao (琼瑶), refers to fine jade — a poetic name that suggests both beauty and strength, qualities that define her character.

Appearance and personality

Wu Qiongyao is described as graceful yet formidable, combining feminine elegance with the hardened capability of a seasoned warrior. She carries herself with a quiet confidence that earns respect from allies and concern from enemies.

Her personality is characterised by determination, compassion, and a strong sense of justice. She is not given to flamboyance or self-promotion; rather, she lets her actions speak for her. In battle, she is fierce and unrelenting. In peacetime, she is thoughtful and supportive of her fellow Swords.

Wu Qiongyao shares a particularly warm relationship with the other female members of the Seven Swords, especially Fei Hongjin (飞红巾), Mao Huanlian (冒浣莲), and Yi Lanzhu (易兰珠). These women form a powerful sisterhood within the broader group, supporting one another through the dangers and hardships of their mission.

Martial arts

Wu Qiongyao is a highly skilled martial artist, trained in the full repertoire of Tianshan techniques:

  • Tianshan sword technique: Her swordplay reflects the characteristic Tianshan style — fluid, precise, and deadly. She is particularly adept at rapid strikes and defensive manoeuvres, making her effective in both offensive and defensive situations.
  • Internal energy (Neigong): Her internal cultivation is strong, developed through years of rigorous mountain training. This gives her the stamina to endure prolonged combat and the resilience to withstand powerful attacks.
  • Lightness skill (Qinggong): Like all Tianshan disciples, Wu Qiongyao possesses exceptional agility and acrobatic ability. Her lightness skill allows her to move across difficult terrain and evade enemy attacks with remarkable grace.

Her fighting style is well-suited to the guerrilla warfare that the Seven Swords employ against the numerically superior Qing forces. She excels at hit-and-run tactics, ambushes, and rapid strikes against vulnerable targets.

Role in the story

As one of the Seven Swords, Wu Qiongyao participates in the campaigns and battles that form the core narrative of Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan. The novel is set during the early reign of the Kangxi Emperor, when the Qing dynasty was still consolidating its control over China and facing resistance from various factions.

The Seven Swords descend from their mountain refuge to join the broader struggle against Qing forces, participating in the conflicts surrounding Wu Sangui’s rebellion and the pacification of the western regions. Wu Qiongyao fights alongside her martial brothers and sisters in these campaigns, contributing her considerable skills to the collective effort.

Her role is that of the dedicated warrior — not the central protagonist, but an essential pillar of the group whose presence strengthens the Seven Swords as a whole.

Relationships

Wu Qiongyao maintains close bonds with all members of the Seven Swords. She looks up to Fei Hongjin as a senior warrior and mentor figure, and she shares a sisterly connection with Mao Huanlian and Yi Lanzhu. She respects Ling Weifeng (凌未风) as the leader of the group and fights loyally under his command.

Her relationship with Zhang Huazhao (张华昭) and Gui Zhongming (桂仲明) is one of mutual respect and camaraderie forged through shared danger and hardship.
