Gui Zhongming

Gui Zhongming

Gui Zhongming (Chinese: 桂仲明, pinyin: Guì Zhòngmíng) is one of the Seven Swords of Mount Tianshan in Liang Yusheng’s Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan (七剑下天山). He is a skilled martial artist trained in the Tianshan tradition and a loyal companion to Ling Weifeng (凌未风), the leader of the Seven Swords. His steadfast character and formidable combat skills make him a valued member of the Tianshan school’s resistance against Qing dynasty oppression.

Background

Gui Zhongming was accepted into the Tianshan school as a young disciple, where he trained under the legendary Hui Ming Chan Shi (晦明禅师), the “White-haired Monk of Tianshan.” The Tianshan school was renowned for its combination of martial excellence and moral integrity, and Gui Zhongming absorbed both the fighting techniques and the ethical principles of his master.

His training on the remote and unforgiving slopes of Tianshan Mountain forged both his body and his character. The harsh conditions of mountain life — extreme cold, thin air, and isolation — produced martial artists of exceptional resilience and determination.

Appearance and personality

Gui Zhongming is characterised by his unwavering loyalty and quiet strength. He is not the most charismatic or intellectually complex of the Seven Swords, but his reliability and courage make him indispensable to the group.

He is a man of few words but decisive action. Where others might deliberate or debate, Gui Zhongming acts. His straightforward approach to problems — confronting them directly with martial skill and determination — reflects both his training and his personality.

He is deeply loyal to his martial brothers and sisters, particularly to Ling Weifeng, whom he follows into danger without hesitation. This loyalty is not blind obedience but a genuine commitment to the cause they share: the fight against injustice and the protection of the innocent.

Martial arts

Gui Zhongming is a highly capable martial artist, trained in the orthodox Tianshan tradition:

  • Tianshan sword technique: Gui Zhongming has mastered the sword techniques of the Tianshan school, which are known for their speed, precision, and flowing movements. His swordplay is elegant but deadly, capable of holding its own against the finest fighters in the jianghu.
  • Internal energy (Neigong): His internal cultivation, developed through years of mountain training, provides him with extraordinary stamina and resilience. He can fight for extended periods without tiring, a crucial advantage in the prolonged battles that characterise the novel.
  • Combat discipline: Unlike some martial artists who rely on flamboyant techniques, Gui Zhongming’s fighting style is grounded and disciplined. He fights with economy and efficiency, conserving energy for the moments that matter most.

As one of the Seven Swords, Gui Zhongming is part of a collective force whose combined strength far exceeds the sum of its individual members. The Seven Swords are most effective when they fight together, their techniques complementing and reinforcing one another.

Role in the story

In Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan, Gui Zhongming serves as one of the core members of the Seven Swords who descend from Tianshan Mountain to confront the forces of the Qing court. The novel is set against the backdrop of the early Kangxi Emperor’s reign, during which the Qing dynasty was consolidating its power and crushing opposition across the empire.

Gui Zhongming participates in the major battles and campaigns of the novel, fighting alongside Ling Weifeng, Fei Hongjin, Mao Huanlian, Yi Lanzhu, Zhang Huazhao, and Wu Qiongyao against the Qing military forces and their martial arts allies.

His role, while not as prominent as that of Ling Weifeng or Fei Hongjin, is essential. He provides the backbone of the Seven Swords — the dependable warrior who can always be counted on when the fighting begins.

Relationships

Gui Zhongming’s most important relationship is with his martial brothers and sisters of the Tianshan school. He shares a particularly close bond with Ling Weifeng, the de facto leader of the Seven Swords, and with Mao Huanlian, whose intelligence and strategic thinking complement his own direct approach.

He respects Fei Hongjin (飞红巾) as a senior martial sister and fellow Tianshan warrior, recognising her exceptional skills and fierce determination. He supports Yi Lanzhu (易兰珠) in her quest for vengeance against Duo Duo, understanding the pain that drives her.
