Yi Lanzhu

Yi Lanzhu

Yi Lanzhu (Chinese: 易兰珠, pinyin: Yì Lánzhū) is one of the Seven Swords of Mount Tianshan in Liang Yusheng’s Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan (七剑下天山). She is the daughter of Yang Yuncong (杨云骢) and Nalan Minghui (纳兰明慧), and her story is one of the most emotionally compelling in the novel — a young woman raised on Tianshan Mountain, trained in martial arts, and driven by an all-consuming desire for vengeance against the Manchu general Duo Duo (多铎), whom she holds responsible for the destruction of her family.

Background

Yi Lanzhu’s origin story is one of tragedy. She was born from the doomed love affair between Yang Yuncong, a Tianshan martial artist, and Nalan Minghui, a Manchu noblewoman. When Yang Yuncong broke into Duo Duo’s residence on the eve of Nalan Minghui’s wedding to try to persuade her to flee, she refused. In his grief and fury, Yang Yuncong tore the infant Yi Lanzhu from her mother’s arms and carried her away to Tianshan Mountain.

Yang Yuncong died when Yi Lanzhu was still young, and the child was subsequently raised by Ling Weifeng (凌未风), who would become known as the “Divine Shaft of Tianshan” (天山神芒). Under Ling Weifeng’s care and training, Yi Lanzhu grew into a formidable martial artist — but she also grew up with a burning hatred for Duo Duo, the man she blamed for separating her from her mother and causing her father’s death.

Appearance and personality

Yi Lanzhu is described as beautiful but fierce, with the sharp features and intense eyes of someone who has known hardship and loss. Her beauty is not the soft, gentle kind associated with court ladies — it is the beauty of a blade, sharp and dangerous.

Her personality is defined by her quest for vengeance. She is passionate, determined, and at times single-minded in her pursuit of justice for her father’s suffering. This obsession shapes much of her behaviour in the novel, driving her to take risks and make decisions that sometimes concern her fellow Swords.

However, Yi Lanzhu is not one-dimensional. Beneath her fierce exterior lies a young woman who craves connection and understanding. Her relationships with her fellow Swords, particularly Ling Weifeng, who is both her master and a father figure, and Mao Huanlian, who serves as an older sister, reveal a softer side that is often buried beneath her warrior persona.

As the story progresses, Yi Lanzhu’s character evolves. Her encounter with Zhang Huazhao (张华昭) and the broader experiences of life among the Seven Swords gradually soften her obsessive quest for vengeance. She learns that justice and love are not mutually exclusive, and that the path forward does not always require the destruction of those who have wronged you.

Martial arts

Yi Lanzhu is one of the most skilled fighters among the Seven Swords, her abilities reflecting both her natural talent and the extraordinary training she received on Tianshan Mountain:

  • Tianshan sword technique: Yi Lanzhu has mastered the sword techniques of the Tianshan school with exceptional proficiency. Her swordplay is fast, aggressive, and precise, reflecting her passionate nature and her determination to succeed in combat.
  • Internal energy (Neigong): Her internal cultivation is among the strongest of her generation, developed through years of intensive training under Ling Weifeng’s exacting supervision.
  • Lightness skill (Qinggong): Yi Lanzhu’s agility is remarkable, allowing her to traverse the most difficult terrain and evade enemy attacks with ease.
  • Combat intensity: What sets Yi Lanzhu apart from her fellow Swords is the sheer intensity she brings to combat. Her fighting is driven by emotion — by her hatred of Duo Duo and her desire for justice — which gives her an edge in battle but also makes her vulnerable to emotional manipulation.

Role in the story

Yi Lanzhu’s quest for vengeance against Duo Duo is one of the central plot threads of Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan. Her determination to avenge her father leads her into dangerous situations and creates tension within the group of Seven Swords, some of whom worry that her obsession will lead to her destruction.

Her relationship with Zhang Huazhao provides a counterpoint to her quest for vengeance. Zhang Huazhao’s gentleness and sincerity offer Yi Lanzhu an alternative vision of life — one in which happiness is possible even after tragedy. Their love story is one of the more hopeful elements in a novel filled with loss and sacrifice.

Relationships

  • Ling Weifeng (凌未风): Her master and surrogate father. He raised her after Yang Yuncong’s death and trained her in the Tianshan martial arts. She respects and loves him deeply.
  • Zhang Huazhao (张华昭): Her love interest. His gentle nature and genuine care for her gradually soften her obsession with vengeance.
  • Nalan Minghui (纳兰明慧): Her mother, whom she has never really known. The absence of her mother is a wound that never fully heals.
  • Yang Yuncong (杨云骢): Her father, whose sacrifice shaped her entire life. She honours his memory through her martial prowess and her determination to fight for justice.
  • Mao Huanlian (冒浣莲): A close friend and sister figure among the Seven Swords.
