Shixiong (simplified: 师兄, traditional: 师兄, pinyin: shīxiōng, jyutping: si1 hing1), literally “elder brother in the teacher’s line,” is a term used to address or refer to an elder male fellow disciple—someone who studies under the same master (师父 — shīfù) and is senior in the lineage. Shī (师) means “teacher”; xiōng (兄) means “elder brother.”
Usage
In martial arts and traditional settings, shixiong is used both as a form of address (“Shixiong”) and as a reference (“my shixiong”). It implies respect for seniority within the same school or master’s line. A female elder fellow disciple is typically addressed as shījiě (师姐 — “elder sister in the teacher’s line”).
In Sword of the Yue Maiden
