Mu Wanqing

Mu Wanqing (simplified: 木婉清, traditional: 木婉清, pinyin: Mù Wǎnqīng, jyutping: muk6 jyun2 cing1) was the daughter of Duan Zhengchun and Qin Hongmian, raised in seclusion by her mother and trained in martial arts. She was known for her beauty, fierce independence, and her tragic relationship with Duan Yu.

Biography

Early life and isolation

Mu Wanqing was raised in complete isolation by her mother Qin Hongmian, who taught her martial arts and instilled in her a vow that the first man to see her face must either marry her or be killed. She grew up believing her parents were dead and that she was an orphan, unaware of her true identity as a daughter of the Dali royal family.

This isolated upbringing created a young woman who was fiercely independent, direct in speech, and completely unfamiliar with social conventions. She wore a black veil to conceal her face and rode a black horse named “Black Rose,” earning her a reputation as a mysterious and dangerous figure in the jianghu.

Meeting Duan Yu

Mu Wanqing first encountered Duan Yu when she was being pursued by enemies and he came to her aid. During their escape, Duan Yu became the first man to see her face when he helped her drink water, which according to her vow meant he must either marry her or be killed. She chose to marry him, and they became engaged.

The two developed genuine feelings for each other, with Duan Yu praising her beauty with the phrase “水木清华，婉兮清扬” (water and wood are pure and bright, gentle and clear). However, their relationship was doomed when they discovered they were half-siblings, making their love impossible.

Discovery of family background

The tragic revelation came when Mu Wanqing discovered that Duan Yu was her half-brother, making their romantic relationship impossible. She learnt that Duan Zhengchun was her father and that she had several half-sisters including Wang Yuyan, Zhong Ling, and Azi.

This discovery devastated Mu Wanqing, as she had to abandon her love for Duan Yu and accept her new identity as a member of the Dali royal family. The revelation also explained why her mother had raised her in isolation and taught her to hate certain women, including Dao Baifeng, Duan Yu’s mother.

Personality and traits

Independent and direct

Mu Wanqing’s most defining characteristic was her fierce independence, shaped by her isolated upbringing. She spoke directly and honestly, often using harsh language and showing little regard for social conventions. Her directness sometimes made her appear rude or aggressive to others.

This independence was also reflected in her martial arts style and her approach to life. She was accustomed to making her own decisions and was not easily influenced by others’ opinions or expectations, making her both refreshing and challenging for other characters to interact with.

Socially awkward but genuine

Despite her independence, Mu Wanqing was socially awkward due to her complete lack of exposure to normal social interactions. She was naive about many aspects of life and often said things that were inappropriate or caused misunderstandings.

However, this awkwardness was balanced by her genuine nature and her unwillingness to engage in social manipulation. Her authenticity and pure heart made her attractive to characters who valued honesty over social sophistication, and she gradually learnt to adapt to social situations while maintaining her essential character.

Loyal and protective

Once Mu Wanqing formed genuine relationships with others, she demonstrated remarkable loyalty and protectiveness. Her commitment to those she cared about was absolute, and she was willing to risk her own safety to protect them.

This loyalty was particularly evident in her relationship with Duan Yu, where she was willing to sacrifice her own happiness for his well-being. Even after learning they were siblings, she continued to care for him deeply and was willing to help him in any way she could, demonstrating that her independence did not prevent her from forming deep emotional connections.

Martial arts abilities

Light-footed techniques

Mu Wanqing was skilled in light-footed techniques that allowed her to move quickly and quietly through various environments. These skills were essential for her survival during her isolated upbringing and made her an effective fighter who could maintain mobility in combat.

Her light-footed abilities reflected her independent nature and her preference for avoiding direct confrontation when possible. This approach to combat demonstrated her strategic thinking and her understanding of how to use her strengths effectively, making her a formidable opponent despite her relatively young age.

Hidden weapons mastery

Mu Wanqing was particularly skilled in the use of hidden weapons, especially sleeve arrows (袖箭), which she could fire three at a time. This skill reflected her isolated upbringing and her need to develop unconventional methods for self-defense.

Her mastery of hidden weapons demonstrated her resourcefulness and her ability to adapt to various situations. This skill made her dangerous even to opponents who were more powerful in direct combat, and she used these weapons effectively during her encounters with various enemies.

Combat strategy

Mu Wanqing’s approach to combat emphasized strategy and mobility over brute force. She preferred to use her light-footed techniques to maintain distance and her hidden weapons to create opportunities for attack.

This strategic approach reflected her independent nature and her understanding that victory in combat often depended on using one’s strengths effectively rather than matching an opponent’s style directly.
