Zhong Ling

Zhong Ling (simplified: 钟灵, traditional: 鐘靈, Jyutping: zung1 ling4, pinyin: Zhōng Líng) was the daughter of Duan Zhengchun and Gan Baobao, raised by her adoptive father Zhong Wanchou in Valley of Ten Thousand Calamities.

Biography

Early life and upbringing

Zhong Ling’s early life was marked by mystery and isolation, as she was raised away from the Dali court and her father’s other children. Her mother, whose identity remains largely unknown, chose to raise her daughter in seclusion, creating a character who was both independent and somewhat naive about the broader world. Zhong Ling was the daughter of Duan Zhengchun and his lover Gan Baobao, known as “Pretty Night Fork.” Her adoptive father was Zhong Wanchou, known as “Kill Anyone You See.” She grew up in Valley of Ten Thousand Calamities and kept a Lightning Marten as a pet, which was extremely poisonous and incredibly agile. This isolated upbringing shaped Zhong Ling’s personality, making her both fiercely independent and somewhat socially awkward. Her lack of exposure to normal social interactions created a character who was direct and honest but sometimes struggled with complex social situations.

Meeting Duan Yu

Zhong Ling first met Duan Yu in the Wuliang Mountains, wearing green shoes and sitting on a beam with her Lightning Marten while the Wuliang Sword School was competing in martial arts. When Duan Yu laughed at Gong’s fall, the Wuliang Sword School attacked him, and Zhong Ling released her Lightning Marten to rescue him. When the Wuliang Sword School demanded she come down, Zhong Ling released the Lightning Marten to bite them again.

Zhong Ling’s life changed dramatically when she encountered Duan Yu, her half-brother, though neither was aware of their familial relationship at the time. Their meeting created a complex dynamic that would influence both characters’ development throughout the novel. Later, when trapped on Wuliang Mountain by the Shennong Gang, Duan Yu sought Mu Wanqing to rescue her.

Valley of Ten Thousand Calamities

In the stone chamber of her family’s Valley of Ten Thousand Calamities, Duan Yu and Mu Wanqing were forced to take “Yin-Yang Harmony Powder” (a powerful aphrodisiac), but since they were siblings (later proven not to be), they could not marry. Zhong Ling attempted to rescue them, but Ba Tianshi, one of Dali’s three ministers, secretly dug a tunnel and switched places with Mu Wanqing.

Later developments

After learning she was Duan Yu’s sister, Zhong Ling devoted herself to being his good younger sister.

Personality and traits

Appearance and demeanor

Zhong Ling was described as having a round face with a small dimple at the corner of her mouth, her face like morning clouds, eyes like autumn water, skin like congealed fat, and a smile like flowers. Her appearance was bright and radiant, with breath like orchids. Although her head and face were covered with coal dust and grass, it could not hide her beautiful features. Her skin was snow-white and tender, white with a hint of red, making her even more beautiful and charming. Her voice was both sweet and soft, with gentle speech.

Innocent and lively nature

Zhong Ling was naturally lively and optimistic, with a touch of cleverness. She was intelligent but not mature, gentle but not introverted. Her innocence and cheerfulness, sunshine and openness were her greatest virtues, expressing endless pure loveliness.

She possessed both refinement and a hint of boldness, being both considerate and lovely, as well as lively and beautiful. Her personality was characterized by her cheerful and optimistic nature, making her a refreshing presence in the story.

Loyalty and devotion

This loyalty was particularly evident in her relationship with Duan Yu, where she was willing to sacrifice her own happiness for his well-being. Her protective instincts demonstrated that her independence did not prevent her from forming deep emotional connections. Once Zhong Ling learned she was Duan Yu’s sister, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to being his good younger sister. Her loyalty to family and her protective instincts toward those she cared about were defining characteristics of her personality.

Martial arts abilities

Lightning Marten mastery

Zhong Ling’s primary martial arts ability centered around her mastery of the Lightning Marten, an extremely poisonous and incredibly agile creature. She was able to control and command this dangerous pet with remarkable skill, using it as both a weapon and a means of intimidation.

The Lightning Marten was so fast and deadly that it could easily defeat opponents who were much more skilled in traditional martial arts. Zhong Ling’s ability to control such a dangerous creature demonstrated her unique talents and her unconventional approach to combat.

Poison techniques

Zhong Ling was particularly skilled in the use of hidden weapons, which allowed her to attack unexpectedly and maintain the element of surprise. This skill reflected her isolated upbringing and her need to develop unconventional methods for self-defense.

As the keeper of the Lightning Marten, Zhong Ling was knowledgeable about various poisons and their effects. Her understanding of toxic substances made her a formidable opponent, as she could use poison both through her pet and potentially through other means.

This knowledge of poisons reflected her upbringing in Valley of Ten Thousand Calamities, where she would have been exposed to various dangerous creatures and substances that could be used for self-defense.

Agility and mobility

Zhong Ling demonstrated considerable agility and mobility, particularly when moving through various environments. Her ability to navigate difficult terrain and her quick reflexes made her an effective fighter who could avoid direct confrontation when necessary.

Her mobility skills were particularly evident during her encounters with various martial artists, where she could quickly escape dangerous situations or position herself advantageously for her Lightning Marten to attack.

Relationships

Duan Yu

Zhong Ling’s relationship with Duan Yu was the central focus of her character arc and represented one of the most tragic aspects of the novel. Duan Zhengchun

Zhong Ling’s relationship with her father Duan Zhengchun was complicated by his failure to take responsibility for her upbringing and his general neglect of his family responsibilities. Her discovery of his identity created mixed emotions of anger, disappointment, and a desire for connection.

This relationship demonstrated the consequences of parental neglect and the complex emotions that could arise when children discovered the truth about their parents’ actions and choices.

Half-siblings

Zhong Ling’s relationships with her half-siblings, including Wang Yuyan, Mu Wanqing, and Azi, were complicated by their shared father and their different upbringings.
