Luo Bing

Luo Bing

Luo Bing (Chinese: 骆冰, pinyin: Luò Bīng), known as the Mandarin Duck Blades (鸳鸯刀), is the eleventh leader of the Red Flower Society and the wife of its fourth leader, Wen Tailai. She is one of the few female leaders in the organisation and plays an active combat role throughout the novel.

Appearance and personality

Luo Bing is described as having fair, luminous skin and striking features, with a naturally cheerful demeanour that makes her stand out in any room. She speaks northern Mandarin with a soft Jiangnan accent that adds a distinctive charm to her voice.

Her defining trait is her straightforward, uninhibited personality. She is bold, outspoken, and never hides her feelings — a rarity among the women in wuxia fiction. She loves to laugh, hates pretence, and treats both allies and enemies with refreshing candour. Unlike many female characters who are defined by their relationships, Luo Bing is first and foremost a warrior in her own right.

Martial arts

Luo Bing is a skilled fighter whose weapon of choice gives her her nickname. The Mandarin Duck Blades are a matched pair of swords — one long, one short — that she wields together with fluid precision. She is also proficient with throwing knives, capable of hitting targets at distance while engaged in close combat.

Her fighting style is aggressive and dynamic, reflecting her personality. She fights with a kind of joyous ferocity that makes her both effective and unpredictable. Jin Yong writes that when she holds a throwing knife, “her delicate fingers grasp the white blade like holding a blooming flower” — beautiful but deadly.

Role in the novel

Luo Bing is deeply involved in the central plot from the beginning. When she and Wen Tailai are ambushed at the Sandao Gou inn, they fight fiercely but are overwhelmed. Lu Feiqing comes to their aid, but Wen Tailai is wounded and eventually captured after the tragic incident at Iron Gall Manor.

Determined to rescue her husband, Luo Bing joins the Red Flower Society’s mission with unwavering resolve. She participates in intercepting supply convoys, tracking down leads on Wen Tailai’s whereabouts, and the ultimately successful rescue operation. Her combat skills are essential to several key encounters.

During the escape, a complicated subplot develops when Yu Yutong, the fourteenth leader, develops romantic feelings for Luo Bing despite her marriage. Luo Bing handles the situation with characteristic directness — she rejects him firmly but without cruelty, maintaining their working relationship within the society.

Relationship with Wen Tailai

Luo Bing and Wen Tailai share one of the most genuine marriages in Jin Yong’s work. They are partners in every sense — she fights alongside him, stands by him during his capture, and leads the rescue effort when he falls into enemy hands. Their relationship is built on mutual respect and shared purpose rather than idealised romance.

When they are briefly reunited during the rescue, Wen Tailai sees his wife’s radiant smile through the dying firelight — a moment Jin Yong writes with understated tenderness that captures their bond perfectly.

Later appearances

Luo Bing also appears in Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain (雪山飞狐), continuing her role as a Red Flower Society leader.
