Feng Asan (simplified: 冯阿三, traditional: 馮阿三, pinyin: Féng Āsān, jyutping: fung4 aa3 saam1) was one of the Eight Friends of Hangu, specializing in soil works and construction as a member of the Deaf Mute School. He was the sixth disciple of Su Xinghe and was renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship in construction and mechanical engineering.
Biography
Early life and training
Feng Asan was one of the Eight Friends of Hangu, a group of specialized disciples under Su Xinghe of the Deaf Mute School. Each friend represented a different artistic or scholarly discipline, with Feng Asan specializing in soil works and construction. As a member of the Deaf Mute School, he contributed to the sect’s unique approach to martial arts, which combined traditional fighting techniques with specialized artistic and scholarly skills.
Construction expertise and background
Feng Asan’s primary specialisation was in soil works and construction, representing the practical and engineering aspects of traditional Chinese culture. According to his fellow disciple Xue Muhua, Feng Asan was originally a carpenter by trade, and was already a skilled craftsman before joining the sect, but after learning from their master, he became even more skilled.1 This demonstrates his exceptional craftsmanship and the sect’s commitment to preserving and developing various practical traditions alongside martial arts.
Engineering knowledge and techniques
Feng Asan possessed advanced knowledge of traditional Chinese construction methods, including foundation work, building techniques, engineering principles, and material science. His expertise extended to mechanical arts and the creation of sophisticated devices, as evidenced by his ability to operate complex mechanisms and his recognition of sect-made fireworks and other engineered items.
Major adventures and challenges
Feng Asan played a crucial role during the confrontation with Ding Chunqiu at Xue Muhua’s estate. When the group was trapped in an underground shelter, Feng Asan demonstrated his engineering expertise by analyzing the structure: “This underground shelter, looking at the wood grain and stone materials, must have been built over three hundred years ago, I wonder which school of craftsmen built it.”2 His technical assessment helped the group understand their situation and plan their escape strategy.
During the escape, Feng Asan operated the mechanical mechanisms with precision, timing the release of smoke bombs and coordinating the group’s exit. His engineering skills were essential for their survival, as he controlled the complex mechanical systems that allowed them to escape the underground shelter while maintaining tactical advantage.
The confrontation with Ding Chunqiu
Feng Asan was actively involved in the battle against Ding Chunqiu and his Xingxiu Sect disciples. During the fierce confrontation, he fought alongside his fellow Eight Friends of Hangu, demonstrating both his martial arts abilities and his engineering expertise. He was struck by Ding Chunqiu’s phosphorus fire attacks, which left him severely injured but still capable of contributing to the group’s defense.
Mechanical expertise in combat
Feng Asan’s understanding of mechanical systems proved invaluable during the battle. He recognized the sect-made fireworks and other engineered devices used by Ding Chunqiu’s disciples, allowing him to identify potential threats and countermeasures. His ability to operate complex mechanisms under pressure demonstrated the practical application of his construction skills in combat situations.
Role in the sect’s crisis
When Su Xinghe was poisoned by Ding Chunqiu, Feng Asan was among the Eight Friends of Hangu who witnessed their master’s death and the subsequent transfer of leadership to Xuzhu. Despite his injuries, he participated in the final confrontation with Ding Chunqiu at Shaolin Monastery, where he and his fellow disciples provided support to Xuzhu during the climactic battle.
Feng Asan’s engineering knowledge and mechanical skills were crucial throughout these crises, as he was able to assess structural integrity, operate escape mechanisms, and provide technical support to his comrades during their various challenges.
