Biography

Early life and training

Fan Bailing was one of the Eight Friends of Hangu, a group of specialized disciples under Su Xinghe of the Deaf Mute School. Each friend represented a different artistic or scholarly discipline, with Fan Bailing specializing in Weiqi (Go). As a member of the Deaf Mute School, he contributed to the sect’s unique approach to martial arts, which combined traditional fighting techniques with specialized artistic and scholarly skills.

Weiqi mastery and achievements

Fan Bailing’s primary specialization was in Weiqi (Go), the ancient Chinese board game that represents the pinnacle of strategic thinking. He was recognized as having few equals in the world today in Weiqi, having devoted decades to studying the game. His expertise was so renowned that he was specifically identified as the second disciple and chess enthusiast among the Eight Friends of Hangu.

The magnetic weiqi board weapon

Fan Bailing’s unique weapon was a magnetic weiqi board that served both as a tool for his studies and as a combat weapon. The board was designed with magnetic properties so that when iron-cast pieces were placed on it, they wouldn’t move or fall even in a moving carriage. This practical design for study later became useful in combat, where he could use the board to attract and control enemy weapons and employ the pieces as projectiles.

Strategic thinking development

Weiqi required exceptional strategic thinking and pattern recognition, skills that Fan Bailing mastered to an extraordinary degree. His expertise in this game reflected his intellectual capabilities and his understanding of complex strategic situations.

Major adventures and challenges

One of Fan Bailing’s most dramatic moments occurred when he attempted to solve the legendary Zhenlong chess puzzle set by his grandmaster. This puzzle, with over 200 pieces and multiple layers of complexity including captures, mutual survival, eternal life, counter-attacks, and breath counting, proved too challenging even for his decades of study. His attempt demonstrated both his dedication and the dangers of overreaching - he suffered physical distress including chest pain and eventually spat blood from the mental strain. Despite the danger, he continued, declaring his determination to give his all. Su Xinghe, recognizing the danger, warned him that the puzzle was extremely difficult and that his natural talent was limited, making it unlikely he could solve it, especially with Ding Chunqiu nearby using evil arts to confuse minds.

The confrontation with Ding Chunqiu

Fan Bailing played a crucial role in the confrontation with Ding Chunqiu and his Xingxiu Sect disciples. During the battle at Xue Muhua’s residence, Fan Bailing fought alongside his fellow Eight Friends of Hangu against the invading forces. He demonstrated his martial arts abilities by using his magnetic weiqi board as a weapon, attracting enemy weapons and using the pieces as projectiles.

However, Fan Bailing suffered severe injuries during the battle, including being struck by Ding Chunqiu’s phosphorus fire attacks and being hit by You Tanzhi’s cold poison palm. These injuries left him weakened and vulnerable, though he continued to fight bravely alongside his comrades.

Role in the sect’s crisis

When Su Xinghe was poisoned by Ding Chunqiu, Fan Bailing was among the Eight Friends of Hangu who witnessed their master’s death and the subsequent transfer of leadership to Xuzhu. Despite his injuries, Fan Bailing participated in the final confrontation with Ding Chunqiu at Shaolin Monastery, where he and his fellow disciples provided support to Xuzhu during the climactic battle.

Fan Bailing’s strategic thinking and loyalty to his faction were evident throughout these crises, as he consistently supported his fellow disciples and remained committed to the sect’s values even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Personality and traits

Fan Bailing demonstrated exceptional loyalty to his master and sect. When Su Xinghe was poisoned by Ding Chunqiu, Fan Bailing immediately showed his protective nature by warning the new faction leader not to enter the poisoned house, recognizing that Ding Chunqiu was full of tricks and impossible to guard against.

Values and principles

Despite being a Weiqi master, Fan Bailing showed remarkable humility about his limitations. When faced with the Zhenlong puzzle, he acknowledged his limited natural talent and continued to strive despite the physical toll. His dedication to his craft transcended personal pride, as he was willing to risk his life in pursuit of solving the puzzle.

Intellectual approach

Fan Bailing’s tactical mind extended beyond the chessboard. During the confrontation with Ding Chunqiu, he demonstrated strategic thinking by protecting his new faction leader from potential danger, showing that his analytical skills served both intellectual and practical purposes.

Fan Bailing’s Weiqi skills were integrated with his martial arts training, creating a unique fighting style that incorporated strategic thinking and pattern recognition. This combination reflected the Deaf Mute School’s innovative approach to martial arts development.

Strategic combat advantages

Fan Bailing’s understanding of Weiqi enhanced his martial arts capabilities by providing strategic planning, pattern recognition, positional awareness, and adaptive thinking. His combat approach reflected his Weiqi philosophy that while proper formations and orthodox strategies exist, unorthodox tactics and clever tricks are also permitted.

Magnetic board weapon mastery

Fan Bailing’s magnetic weiqi board served as both shield and weapon, allowing him to control the battlefield by manipulating enemy weapons and creating strategic advantages through the board’s magnetic properties. The pieces became deadly projectiles, demonstrating how his intellectual discipline translated into practical combat effectiveness.
