De Cheng (simplified: 德成, traditional: 德成, pinyin: Dé Chéng, jyutping: dak1 sing4), also known as Sea Eagle (海冬青, Hǎi Dōngqīng), was a martial artist from Liaodong who attempted to obtain the Dragon-Slaying Dao but was killed by Yin Susu.
Biography
Encounter with Yu Daiyan
De Cheng encountered Yu Daiyan at a temple and attempted to flatter him, hoping to gain his help. When Yu Daiyan asked for his name, De Cheng introduced himself as “De Cheng” and mentioned that friends on the Liaodong road had given him the nickname “Sea Eagle” (海冬青), referring to a fierce bird of prey native to Liaodong.
Attempt to obtain Dragon-Slaying Dao
De Cheng tried to convince Yu Daiyan that whoever possessed the Dragon-Slaying Dao could command the world, but Yu Daiyan was skeptical. De Cheng’s neili cultivation was far inferior to Yu Daiyan’s, and when Yu Daiyan detected approaching enemies and extinguished the candles, De Cheng could not hear them.
Death
De Cheng was killed by Yin Susu and her subordinates from the Tianying Order when they came to claim the Dragon-Slaying Dao. His death was part of the events that led to Yu Daiyan’s injury and the subsequent chain of events involving Zhang Cuishan and Yin Susu.
Personality and traits
De Cheng was greedy and willing to risk his life for the Dragon-Slaying Dao. His famous quote, “I would rather lose my life than give up the Dragon-Slaying Dao,” exemplifies his obsession with the weapon. He was flattering and manipulative, trying to use Yu Daiyan for his own purposes.
