She is described as having a “smooth and clever” personality, characterized by her ability to “speak before smiling” and demonstrate intelligent conversation skills.
Court influence and political maneuvering
Concubine Mu’s position as the emperor’s favorite concubine gave her significant influence in court affairs. She was known for her ability to maintain the emperor’s favour through her gentle demeanor and clever conversation skills. Her influence extended beyond the harem to include participation in important political decisions and military matters.
Her ability to navigate the complex court politics demonstrated her survival skills and political acumen. In a court environment where power could shift rapidly and where concubines could easily fall from favor, Concubine Mu maintained her position through careful manipulation and strategic behavior.
Personality and traits
Concubine Mu exhibits a complex personality that combines political savvy with manipulative cunning. She maintains a submissive and gentle demeanor in front of the Liao Emperor, using “soft whispers” to maintain his favor. However, beneath this facade lies a calculating mind capable of orchestrating complex plots. Her ability to adapt her behavior to different situations demonstrates her survival instincts in the dangerous world of court politics.
Manipulative intelligence
Concubine Mu’s most striking characteristic was her ability to manipulate others through psychological means rather than direct force. She demonstrated exceptional skill in reading people’s weaknesses and exploiting them for her own purposes. Her manipulation of Azi was particularly sophisticated, as she identified and exploited the young woman’s emotional vulnerabilities and desire for love.
Survival instincts
In the brutal world of court politics, Concubine Mu demonstrated remarkable survival instincts. She understood that her position depended entirely on the emperor’s favour and took great care to maintain it. Her ability to adapt her behavior to different situations and to use her influence strategically showed her understanding of power dynamics.
The drug plot
Concubine Mu’s most significant role occurs in Chapter 49, where she implements a cunning scheme that becomes central to Xiao Feng’s fate. Her primary plot involves manipulating Azi’s obsessive feelings for Xiao Feng. She takes advantage of Azi’s emotional vulnerability and teaches her how to use mind-controlling drugs.
Concubine Mu’s plot centered around a small red porcelain bottle containing what she claimed was “holy water” (圣水) from the Sacred Virtue Temple in Shangjing. She told Azi that this water had the power to make men love only one woman forever. The deception was elaborate, including a story about a powerful monk at the Sacred Virtue Temple, claims that she had already used the water on the emperor with great success, instructions for Azi to make a solemn oath not to reveal the secret, and the deliberate “accidental” dropping of the bottle to allow Azi to steal it.
Concubine Mu carefully exploited Azi’s emotional state and her desperate desire for Xiao Feng’s love. She used Azi’s vulnerability to create a situation where the young woman would willingly participate in her own deception, including sympathetic listening to Azi’s romantic troubles, offering seemingly helpful advice about dealing with difficult men, creating a sense of shared experience and sisterhood, and exploiting Azi’s belief in magical solutions from her Xingxiu Order background.
Xiao Feng’s capture
The drugs cause Xiao Feng to temporarily lose his neili, making him vulnerable to capture. This leads to his imprisonment by the Liao Emperor’s personal guards within the main tent. This event serves as a crucial turning point in the story, setting up the political confrontation between Xiao Feng and the Liao Emperor that ultimately leads to the Yanmen Pass conclusion.
Concubine Mu’s plot was coordinated with a large-scale military operation to capture Xiao Feng, including surrounding the Southern Court Prince’s residence with troops, closing all city gates to prevent escape, mobilizing the Flying Dragon, Flying Tiger, and Flying Leopard battalions, and creating a situation where Xiao Feng would be vulnerable to the poisoned drink.
Martial arts abilities
Concubine Mu did not possess significant martial arts abilities, relying instead on her political skills and manipulation to achieve her goals.

The aftermath
After Xiao Feng was captured, Concubine Mu’s role in the plot was revealed to Azi, who realized she had been deceived.
