An Xiaohui (simplified: 安小慧, traditional: 安小慧, pinyin: Ān Xiǎohuì, jyutping: on1 siu2 wai6) was Yuan Chengzhi’s childhood playmate, a disciple of Huang Zhen (黄真) of the Huashan School, and the wife of Cui Ximin (崔希敏) in Sword Stained with Royal Blood. She was the daughter of An Jianqing (安剑清) and An Daniang (安大娘).
Biography
Early life and childhood
An Xiaohui was the daughter of An Jianqing, the commander of the secret police (锦衣卫 — Jǐnyīwèi), and An Daniang, a rebel spy. Her grandfather was Chu Dadao (楚大刀 — Chǔ Dàdāo). During her childhood, An Xiaohui lived with her family, and she became a childhood playmate of Yuan Chengzhi, the protagonist of Sword Stained with Royal Blood.
The two children grew up together and developed a close friendship, though their relationship remained purely platonic. When they were young, they played together and spent time in each other’s company, creating fond childhood memories.
Training under Huang Zhen
An Xiaohui became a disciple of Huang Zhen, the first disciple of Mu Renqing (穆人清) and the leader of the Huashan School. Under Huang Zhen’s guidance, An Xiaohui received training in the Huashan School’s martial arts techniques.
As a disciple of Huang Zhen, An Xiaohui became part of the Huashan School’s lineage and would have been trained in the school’s orthodox martial arts techniques. Her training gave her solid martial arts skills, and she was described as having rigorous attack and defence techniques (攻守法度严谨 — gōngshǒu fǎdù yánjǐn).
Conflict with the Wen family
An Xiaohui, along with her master Huang Zhen and her fellow disciple Cui Ximin, tracked stolen gold to the Wen family’s stronghold. The group encountered Yuan Chengzhi and Xia Qingqing (夏青青), who were also dealing with the Wen family over the stolen gold.
During this encounter, Huang Zhen engaged in battle with the Wen family’s Five Elders, using his copper brush and iron abacus as weapons. Despite being trapped in their Five Elements Formation, Huang Zhen was able to hold his own, though he struggled to break through the formation’s defences. He was eventually rescued by Yuan Chengzhi, who had just arrived and demonstrated his superior skills.
An Xiaohui participated in this conflict alongside her master, demonstrating her loyalty and willingness to support Huang Zhen in battle.
Relationship with Yuan Chengzhi
An Xiaohui and Yuan Chengzhi were childhood playmates, and when they met again as adults, An Xiaohui had already developed feelings for Cui Ximin. However, An Xiaohui’s appearance in Yuan Chengzhi’s life did create some complications in his relationship with Xia Qingqing.
When Yuan Chengzhi used An Xiaohui’s jade hairpin (玉簪 — yùzān) to break the Wen family’s Five Elements Formation (五行阵 — Wǔxíng Zhèn), Xia Qingqing became jealous, complaining that Yuan Chengzhi had used An Xiaohui’s hairpin instead of her own. This incident demonstrated Xia Qingqing’s jealousy and created some tension, though the situation was quickly resolved.
However, the emotional entanglement between An Xiaohui and Yuan Chengzhi was not as complex as some other relationships in Jin Yong’s novels. The book quickly clarified that An Xiaohui and Cui Ximin were a couple, and An Xiaohui’s relationship with Yuan Chengzhi remained purely platonic. This allowed the story to avoid the complex emotional complications that appeared in other Jin Yong novels, such as the relationship between Guo Jing, Huang Rong, and Hua Zheng in The Legend of the Condor Heroes.
Marriage to Cui Ximin
An Xiaohui married Cui Ximin, her fellow disciple under Huang Zhen. Cui Ximin was known as the “Subduing Tiger Diamond” (伏虎金刚 — Fúhǔ Jīngāng) and was described as rough, impatient, and somewhat simple-minded, but also as honest, straightforward, and lovable.
The marriage between An Xiaohui and Cui Ximin was described as a good match, as both were simple, honest, and straightforward people. An Xiaohui was described as simple, virtuous, and kind-hearted (质朴贤惠心思单纯 — zhìpǔ xiánhuì xīnsī dānchún), which matched Cui Ximin’s honest and straightforward nature.
When An Jianqing was dying, Cui Ximin calmly comforted An Xiaohui, demonstrating his ability to be steady and supportive during critical moments. This showed the strength of their relationship and their mutual support for each other.
Personality and character
An Xiaohui was characterised by her simple, virtuous, and kind-hearted nature. She was described as having a simple and honest personality, which made her a suitable match for Cui Ximin, who had a similar straightforward character.
Despite being Yuan Chengzhi’s childhood playmate, An Xiaohui did not develop romantic feelings for him, and she quickly formed a relationship with Cui Ximin. This demonstrated her practical and straightforward approach to relationships, avoiding the complex emotional entanglements that could have complicated the story.
An Xiaohui was described as being around eighteen or nineteen years old when she appeared in the story. Her appearance was noted as beautiful, with rosy cheeks (双颊晕红 — shuāngjiá yūnhóng) and an attractive appearance (容貌娟秀 — róngmào juānxiù). Her eyes were described as round and lively (一对圆圆的眼珠骨溜溜的转动 — yīduì yuányuán de yǎnzhū gǔliūliū de zhuàndòng), showing her alert and intelligent nature.
Martial arts
An Xiaohui was trained in the Huashan School’s martial arts techniques under Huang Zhen’s guidance. Her attack and defence techniques were described as rigorous and well-structured (攻守法度严谨 — gōngshǒu fǎdù yánjǐn), demonstrating her solid martial arts foundation.
As a disciple of Huang Zhen and a member of the Huashan School, An Xiaohui would have been trained in the school’s various techniques, including sword techniques, palm techniques, and internal energy methods.

Her character exemplified the values of simplicity, honesty, and virtue, showing that martial artists could have simple, happy lives despite the complexities of the jianghu. Her marriage to Cui Ximin, who was also simple and honest, showed that compatibility and mutual understanding were more important than sophistication or complexity in relationships.
An Xiaohui’s role in the story also served to highlight Xia Qingqing’s jealousy and the complexities of Yuan Chengzhi’s relationships, while avoiding the more complicated emotional entanglements that appeared in other Jin Yong novels. Her clear relationship with Cui Ximin helped simplify the emotional dynamics of the story, allowing it to focus on other aspects of the narrative.
Her character demonstrated that childhood friendships could remain platonic and that people could find happiness in simple, straightforward relationships, even in the complex world of the jianghu.
