Yan Yuan (simplified: 颜垣, traditional: 顏垣, pinyin: Yán Yuán, jyutping: ngaan4 wun4) was the leader of the Earth Banner Faction (厚土旗) of the Ming Order. He was known for his exceptional strength, having earned the title “Ming Order’s First Divine Strength” (明教第一神力), and was an expert in fortifications and construction.
Biography
Leadership of the Earth Banner Faction
Yan Yuan served as the leader of the Earth Banner Faction, one of the Ming Order’s Five Elements Factions. The Earth Banner Faction specialized in defensive operations and fortifications, providing crucial engineering and construction capabilities to the Order.
Physical appearance and strength
Yan Yuan was described as short and fat (矮胖), but despite his unassuming appearance, he possessed exceptional strength. He was known throughout the Order as “Ming Order’s First Divine Strength,” demonstrating his remarkable physical power.
Expertise in construction and fortifications
Yan Yuan was highly skilled in construction and fortifications (精于土木构筑之学). This expertise made the Earth Banner Faction essential for defensive operations, siege warfare, and the construction of fortifications. His knowledge of tunnels and underground passages would prove crucial in later operations.
The Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly
During the Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly at Shaolin Temple, Cheng Kun (disguised as Yuanzhen) had captured and imprisoned Kongwen, the abbot of Shaolin Temple. When his plan to use the assembly to cause chaos failed, Cheng Kun attempted to burn Kongwen alive, piling sulfur and firewood high inside and outside the Bodhidharma Hall (达摩堂).
Fan Yao, the Bright Right Messenger, led the Water Banner and Earth Banner to infiltrate the temple and find Kongwen. However, Cheng Kun’s arrangement was extremely thorough, and as soon as a fire was ignited, the hall caught in a blazing inferno, burning five Earth Banner disciples to their deaths.
Yan Yuan and Fan Yao moved quickly through the smoke and fire to rescue Kongwen. Despite the danger, they successfully reached the abbot and extracted him through a tunnel. All three suffered burns on their clothes, hair, and eyebrows, but without the tunnel, they would not have been able to escape and would have been buried under the burning hall.
This rescue operation demonstrated Yan Yuan’s expertise in tunnel construction and his courage in dangerous situations. The act of rescuing Kongwen, a member of an orthodox school that had long considered the Ming Order an enemy, also demonstrated the Order’s principles of justice and its willingness to help those in need, regardless of past conflicts.
Cooperation with other banners
The Earth Banner Faction often coordinated with other banners, particularly the Water Banner Faction, in tactical operations. This coordination demonstrated the effectiveness of the Five Elements Banners system and Yan Yuan’s ability to work with other leaders to achieve common objectives.
