Xianyu Tong (simplified: 鲜于通, traditional: 鮮於通, pinyin: Xiānyú Tōng, jyutping: sin1 jyu1 tung1), known as the Divine Calculator (神机子), was the leader of the Huashan School. Despite his position as head of one of the Six Major Factions, he was a cunning, treacherous, and morally corrupt individual who betrayed those who had helped him and committed murder to further his ambitions. He was ultimately exposed by Zhang Wuji at Bright Peak and killed after being poisoned by his own Golden Silkworm Gu.
Biography
Early betrayal in Miao territories
Xianyu Tong’s early history was marked by betrayal and manipulation. While in Guizhou’s Miao territories, he had a relationship with a Miao woman, but he abandoned her, leaving her with a broken heart. In revenge, the Miao woman poisoned him with the Golden Silkworm Gu (金蚕蛊毒), a deadly poison. However, she had not used a fatal dose, hoping he would return to her, allowing for a cure.
Xianyu Tong, rather than seeking reconciliation, fled and even stole two pairs of golden silkworms from the Miao woman. However, the poison soon overcame him, and he collapsed. He was saved by Hu Qingniu, the Butterfly Valley Medical Immortal, who was gathering herbs in the Miao territories at the time. Hu Qingniu worked for three days and three nights without sleep, exhausting himself to save Xianyu Tong’s life.
Betrayal of Hu Qingniu and Hu Qingyang
Grateful for Hu Qingniu’s lifesaving treatment, Xianyu Tong became sworn brothers with him, with a relationship as close as real siblings. Hu Qingniu even promised his sister Hu Qingyang (胡青羊) to Xianyu Tong in marriage.
Xianyu Tong and Hu Qingyang fell in love, and Hu Qingyang gave herself to him, becoming pregnant. However, Xianyu Tong had his eyes on the leadership position of the Huashan School. When he had the opportunity to marry the Huashan School leader’s only daughter, he abandoned Hu Qingyang, ignoring her completely in pursuit of power.
Devastated by Xianyu Tong’s betrayal and abandonment, Hu Qingyang, who was pregnant with his child, committed suicide in shame and anger, resulting in two deaths—herself and her unborn child.
Murder of Bai Yuan and framing the Ming Order
Xianyu Tong’s treachery did not end with Hu Qingyang’s death. He also murdered his senior disciple brother Bai Yuan (白垣) and framed the Ming Order for the crime. This false accusation became one of the main reasons the Huashan School participated in the Six Schools expedition to attack Bright Peak, as they believed they were seeking revenge for their fallen comrade.
Golden Silkworm Gu
After stealing the golden silkworms from the Miao woman and being saved by Hu Qingniu, Xianyu Tong learned how to raise and breed them. He cultivated the Golden Silkworm Gu and turned it into a poisonous powder, which he hid in the handle of his folding fan. The fan handle contained a mechanism that, when pressed, could release the poison using internal energy, allowing him to harm enemies invisibly.
This weapon became his signature tool, and he used it to gain advantages in combat, particularly against opponents who might be stronger than him in martial arts.
Six Schools expedition to Bright Peak
Xianyu Tong led the Huashan School in joining the Six Schools expedition to Bright Peak (光明顶), participating in the coordinated attack on the Ming Order headquarters. He served as the strategist for the expedition, using his cunning and intelligence to plan tactics against the Ming Order.
Exposure and death at Bright Peak
At Bright Peak, Xianyu Tong was chosen to represent the Huashan School in battle against Zhang Wuji, who had emerged as a defender of the Ming Order. Xianyu Tong, known for his eloquence and ability to manipulate words, attempted to question Zhang Wuji about his background and master, hoping to find a weakness or create confusion.
However, when Zhang Wuji mentioned the phrase “见贤思齐” (see the virtuous and think of equaling them), he suddenly remembered Hu Qingniu’s story about Xianyu Tong. Zhang Wuji began to expose Xianyu Tong’s crimes, mentioning how he had been saved from Golden Silkworm Gu poisoning, had become sworn brothers with his saviour, and had then betrayed and abandoned that person’s sister, leading to her suicide.
Xianyu Tong, shocked and panicked that his dark secrets were being revealed, attempted to attack Zhang Wuji immediately to silence him. He used the Eagle-Snake Life-and-Death Struggle (鹰蛇生死搏), a Huashan School technique that required using both hands simultaneously—the right hand using a snake-head-like weapon for stabbing and pointing, while the left hand used eagle claw techniques for grasping and twisting. However, Zhang Wuji easily countered his attacks.
Realising he could not win through martial arts alone, Xianyu Tong attempted to use his Golden Silkworm Gu poison, pressing the mechanism on his fan handle to release the toxic powder. However, Zhang Wuji, using his superior internal energy, blew the poison back at Xianyu Tong, causing him to be poisoned by his own weapon.
Suffering from the excruciating pain of the Golden Silkworm Gu poison, Xianyu Tong was forced to confess his crimes in front of all the assembled martial artists. He admitted to murdering Bai Yuan and framing the Ming Order for the crime. Under the intense pain and Zhang Wuji’s pressure, he revealed the truth about his betrayals and crimes.
Xianyu Tong ultimately died at the hands of He Taichong and Ban Shuxian of the Kunlun School, who were attempting to attack Zhang Wuji but accidentally struck the already poisoned and weakened Xianyu Tong instead. His death served as justice for the crimes he had committed against Hu Qingniu, Hu Qingyang, Bai Yuan, and others.
Personality & traits
Cunning and manipulative
Xianyu Tong was known for his intelligence and cunning, earning him the epithet “Divine Calculator” (神机子). He was skilled at using words and strategy to manipulate situations to his advantage, serving as the strategist for the Six Schools expedition. However, he used these abilities for selfish and harmful purposes rather than for the benefit of others.
Treacherous and ungrateful
Xianyu Tong’s defining characteristic was his capacity for betrayal and ingratitude. Despite being saved from certain death by Hu Qingniu and becoming sworn brothers with him, he abandoned Hu Qingniu’s sister Hu Qingyang when it suited his ambitions. He showed no remorse for his actions and continued to commit crimes to further his position and power.
Morally corrupt
Xianyu Tong demonstrated a complete lack of moral integrity. He was willing to murder his own senior disciple brother, frame innocent people, and betray those who had helped him. His actions showed that he prioritised personal gain and power over loyalty, gratitude, or moral principle.
Martial arts abilities
Eagle-Snake Life-and-Death Struggle
Xianyu Tong mastered the Eagle-Snake Life-and-Death Struggle (鹰蛇生死搏), a Huashan School technique that had been passed down for over a hundred years. This technique required using both hands simultaneously in completely different ways: the right hand used a snake-head-shaped weapon (often the handle of a fan) for pointing, stabbing, and striking, while the left hand used eagle claw techniques for grasping, twisting, and capturing.
The technique was designed to overwhelm opponents by forcing them to defend against two different attack styles simultaneously. However, by splitting his attention and force between two different techniques, the power of each individual attack was reduced. Against a master like Zhang Wuji, whose internal energy and martial arts abilities far exceeded his own, the technique proved ineffective.
Golden Silkworm Gu
Xianyu Tong’s most dangerous weapon was the Golden Silkworm Gu (金蚕蛊毒) poison, which he kept hidden in his folding fan. After stealing the golden silkworms from the Miao woman and learning to breed them, he cultivated the poison and turned it into a fine powder. The fan handle contained a hidden mechanism that, when activated, could release the poison using internal energy, making it an invisible and deadly weapon.
However, this weapon ultimately proved to be his undoing when Zhang Wuji blew the poison back at him during their confrontation at Bright Peak.
Internal energy limitations
Despite his position as a school leader, Xianyu Tong’s internal energy was relatively weak compared to top-tier masters. His reliance on cunning, strategy, and poisoned weapons reflected his recognition that he could not compete purely through martial arts ability. This weakness was exposed when he faced Zhang Wuji, whose superior internal energy allowed him to easily counter Xianyu Tong’s techniques and blow the poison back at him.
Relationships
With Hu Qingniu
Xianyu Tong’s relationship with Hu Qingniu began with gratitude and brotherhood but ended in ultimate betrayal. After Hu Qingniu saved his life and the two became sworn brothers, Xianyu Tong betrayed this relationship by seducing and abandoning Hu Qingniu’s sister Hu Qingyang. This betrayal caused Hu Qingniu deep grief and led to multiple failed attempts at revenge, as Hu Qingniu’s martial arts abilities were inferior to Xianyu Tong’s.
With Hu Qingyang
Xianyu Tong’s relationship with Hu Qingyang demonstrated his capacity for emotional manipulation and abandonment. After winning her affection and causing her to become pregnant, he abandoned her completely when he had the opportunity to marry the Huashan School leader’s daughter. His betrayal led to her suicide, along with the death of their unborn child.
With Bai Yuan
Xianyu Tong murdered his senior disciple brother Bai Yuan, demonstrating his willingness to kill even those closest to him to achieve his goals. He then framed the Ming Order for the murder, using the false accusation to justify the Huashan School’s participation in the attack on Bright Peak.
Behind the scenes
Character significance
Xianyu Tong represents one of the most morally corrupt characters in the novel, serving as a contrast to the more principled martial artists. His story demonstrates how intelligence and cunning, when divorced from moral integrity, can lead to terrible consequences. His ultimate exposure and death at Bright Peak serves as a form of poetic justice, as he was killed by his own weapon after being forced to confess his crimes.
Role in the narrative
Xianyu Tong’s story connects several plot threads: his betrayal of Hu Qingniu explains Hu Qingniu’s strict rule of only treating Ming Order members, his framing of the Ming Order for Bai Yuan’s murder explains the Huashan School’s participation in the Six Schools expedition, and his exposure and death at Bright Peak allows Zhang Wuji to avenge Hu Qingyang’s death on behalf of his teacher Hu Qingniu.
His character also serves as an example of how even leaders of “orthodox” schools can be corrupt and morally bankrupt, challenging the simple division between “orthodox” and “unorthodox” factions in the martial arts world.
