Wang Tiee (simplified: 汪铁鹗, traditional: 汪鐵鶚, pinyin: Wāng Tiě’è, jyutping: wong1 tit3 ngok6) is a disciple of the Eagle Claw Wild Goose School (鹰爪雁行门) and a martial officer in Fuk’anggan’s service, in Jin Yong’s Side Story of the Flying Fox. His senior shixiong is the school’s zhangmen Zhou Tiejiao, and his second shixiong is Zeng Tieou (曾铁鸥) (SIDE ch. 12). Burly, loud and thick-browed, he is a plain, dull-witted man but at heart an honest one (SIDE ch. 12, 13, 16).
Biography
Among the “bandits”
Wang rides with the band of supposed robbers who surround Ma Chunhua, Hu Fei and Cheng Lingsu in a stone house. Hu Fei snatches him from his horse as a hostage. Wang refuses to talk, but Cheng Lingsu gets his name out of him, then pretends to know his shixiong and says his eagle-claw work and wild-goose bladework are half-learnt, which he humbly accepts. She draws out that his shixiong have stayed in Beijing and that the whole band will go back for the Grand Assembly once their “errand” is done; he bristles at the idea that they are real bandits. Hu Fei lets him go (SIDE ch. 12). Later he brings the besieged a pot of rice and one of braised pork (SIDE ch. 13).
In Beijing
Wang turns out to be a serving officer. He recognises Hu Fei in a Beijing street, drags him off to drink at the Gathering Heroes Tower (聚英楼), and boasts that Ma Chunhua now lives in luxury in Fuk’anggan’s mansion. At the gambling table he greets his two shixiong with deep respect, and his heart pounds when Zhou loses a whole house to Hu Fei without turning a hair (SIDE ch. 13). When Yuan Ziyi throws Zhou from the pavilion roof, Wang runs to him close to tears and props him up, not seeing that both his legs are out of joint; Zeng Tieou calls him a fool (SIDE ch. 14).
Taking Hu Fei in
After Hu Fei’s night raid on the mansion, Wang is overheard in a wineshop telling a fellow guard, Zhang Jiu, that Hu Fei is a fine man. Hu Fei, in a false beard, joins them. Wang offers him silver and an escort out of the city; when Hu Fei instead asks to be taken into the mansion in Zhang Jiu’s place, Wang is torn between advancement and doing right, and goes away without an answer (SIDE ch. 16). He takes the matter to Zhou Tiejiao, who arranges Hu Fei’s entry without risking him (SIDE ch. 16). Credited afterwards with protecting the princess, Wang is promoted alongside Zhou (SIDE ch. 17).
At the Grand Assembly he stands at the hall door to announce the arrival of the grand zhangmen of nine and a half schools (SIDE ch. 19).
Relationships
- Zhou Tiejiao (Senior shixiong): Wang reveres him and follows his every instruction (SIDE ch. 16).
- Zeng Tieou (Shixiong).
- Hu Fei: Took him hostage, then became a drinking companion; Wang admires him.
Martial arts
Wang uses a goose-feather dao (雁翎刀) and his school’s eagle-claw arts, and is no match for Hu Fei (SIDE ch. 12, 13).
