She is twenty-one or twenty-two, fair and pretty, and at the Grand Assembly of Zhangmen under Heaven she wears a pale yellow gauze jacket over a leaf-green skirt (SIDE ch. 17). Biography
The Grand Assembly
Sang Feihong steps out to face the cross-eyed Ni brothers of the Shuangzi School (双子门) and teases them about which twin is the elder. When they tell her the answer, they demand she take three blows or kowtow three times; she refuses, and they attack her together with long gold sheaths on their fingers. She can only dodge until the brothers catch sight of Fuk’anggan’s twin boys and break off (SIDE ch. 17).
Soon after, the old man Wen Zuiweng, terrified, drops dead when she gives him a playful push, and his companion Shangguan Tiesheng accuses her of killing him. They fight. Shangguan heats his iron pipe red and blows drugged smoke in her face, and she falls senseless. A young scholar knocks his pipe away, and Cheng Lingsu, disguised as a stooped middle-aged woman, revives her with mouthfuls of wine. Sang Feihong fights on, holding her own with a flurry of kicks, until Shangguan’s own smoke drives him mad (SIDE ch. 17).
The scholar then grabs two of the Jade Dragon Cups, and she follows him out, though they have never met. Surrounded by the guards, he has her hold one cup ready to crush. Tang Pei knocks the cup from her wrist with his elbow, kicks her down and seals her knee, and she is bound and set aside with the scholar (SIDE ch. 17). When Red Flower Society men raid the hall, the scholar carries her away in the dark (SIDE ch. 18). He is Xinyan, page to the Red Flower Society’s chief Chen Jialuo (SIDE ch. 19).
Martial arts
Sang Feihong is quick and elusive, with light, nimble footwork. Her school’s chief art is the Iron Lotus art (铁莲功): the toes of the shoes are shod with pointed iron, so that a kick to a vital spot can kill. She fights with a wide range of kicks, including mandarin-duck, crutch, hooking-sweep and double flying kicks (SIDE ch. 17).
