Rou’er (simplified: 柔儿, traditional: 柔儿, pinyin: Róu’ér, jyutping: jau4 ji4) was a servant girl in Heartless Valley who became Gongsun Zhi’s lover. She was murdered by Gongsun Zhi when he chose to save himself rather than her during a crisis, revealing the true nature of his character.
Biography
Relationship with Gongsun Zhi
Rou’er was a maidservant in Heartless Valley who entered into a secret relationship with Gongsun Zhi, the valley master. At the time, Gongsun Zhi was married to Qiu Qianchi, who had a volatile temperament and strict control over her husband. Gongsun Zhi, growing resentful of his wife’s dominance, began the affair with Rou’er and planned to flee Heartless Valley with her.
Discovery and death
When Qiu Qianchi discovered the infidelity, she secretly poisoned hundreds of Passionless Pills with arsenic, leaving only three intact. She then cast both Gongsun Zhi and Rou’er into the Passion Flower thickets, where exposure to the flowers would be fatal without the antidote.
With only one Passionless Pill available and faced with the choice of saving either himself or Rou’er, Gongsun Zhi pretended to be willing to die with her. He told her they would be “husband and wife in the underworld” and drew his sword. Touched by his apparent devotion, Rou’er expressed her willingness to join him in death. However, instead of taking his own life, Gongsun Zhi killed Rou’er with his sword, then consumed the Passionless Pill to save himself from the flower poison.
Personality and traits
Rou’er was portrayed as trusting and devoted to Gongsun Zhi. When he claimed he would join her in death, she believed him and expressed her willingness to die together. Her tragic fate illustrated how easily trust could be betrayed by those willing to sacrifice others for their own survival.
Relationships
Gongsun Zhi
Rou’er’s relationship with Gongsun Zhi was one of misplaced trust and ultimate betrayal. She believed in his professed love and was willing to die with him, only to discover that he was using her devotion as a means to manipulate her into accepting her death so he could save himself.
Behind the scenes
Rou’er’s story serves as a critical turning point in the narrative, revealing Gongsun Zhi’s true character as someone willing to murder a lover to save himself. Her death demonstrated the depths of his selfishness and foreshadowed his later actions, including his betrayal of his wife Qiu Qianchi and his treatment of his daughter Gongsun Lü’e.
Her murder also revealed Qiu Qianchi’s capacity for cruelty, as she set up the situation knowing that Gongsun Zhi would likely choose to save himself, effectively orchestrating Rou’er’s death while testing her husband’s character.
