Li Xunhuan

Li Xunhuan

Li Xunhuan (Chinese: 李寻欢, pinyin: Lǐ Xúnhuān) is the protagonist of Gu Long’s Flying Daggers of Xiao Li (小李飞刀) series. Known as “Xiao Li Fei Dao” (小李飞刀, “Little Li’s Flying Dagger”) or “Xiao Li Tanhua” (小李探花, “Little Li the Third Place Scholar”), he is one of the most tragic and beloved characters in Chinese wuxia fiction.

Li Xunhuan’s legend rests on a single technique: his flying dagger. It is said that his dagger has never missed its target — not once in his entire career. When he throws, he never fails. This absolute reliability is both his greatest strength and the source of his deepest tragedy.

Appearance and personality

Li Xunhuan is described as pale, thin, and perpetually coughing — a man whose physical frailty belies his extraordinary martial skill. He carries a small carving knife that he uses to whittle wooden figurines, a nervous habit that also serves as a disguise for his true weapon: the flying dagger.

His personality is defined by self-sacrifice and quiet suffering. Li Xunhuan is generous, principled, and almost pathologically self-denying. He repeatedly puts others’ happiness ahead of his own, even when it destroys his own life. This trait — noble in theory, destructive in practice — is the central theme of his character arc.

He is a heavy drinker, not out of pleasure but out of a desire to dull the pain of his choices. His coughing is both a symptom of his physical decline and a metaphor for the emotional toll of his self-sacrifice.

Background

Li Xunhuan came from a wealthy and respected family. He was the youngest son and inherited the family estate, but his life was upended by his relationship with Lin Shiyin (林诗音), his cousin and childhood sweetheart.

When his sworn brother Long Xiaoyun (龙啸云) also fell in love with Lin Shiyin, Li Xunhuan made the fateful decision to sacrifice his own happiness. He deliberately alienated Lin Shiyin, making her believe he did not love her, so that she would accept Long Xiaoyun’s proposal. This act of self-denial — intended as noble — sets in motion the tragedy that defines the rest of his life.

The Flying Dagger

Li Xunhuan’s signature weapon is a small throwing dagger, no larger than a finger. The technique is deceptively simple: he throws it, and it hits its target. Every time.

The legend of Li Xunhuan’s dagger is captured in a famous saying in the jianghu:

小李飞刀,例不虚发 — “Little Li’s Flying Dagger: never a miss.”

This absolute reliability is not just a martial arts feat — it is a reflection of Li Xunhuan’s character. When he throws, he commits completely. There is no hesitation, no second-guessing. The dagger represents the one thing in his life that is certain and true.

Major adventures

Sentimental Swordsman, Ruthless Sword (多情剑客无情剑)

The opening novel of the series and one of Gu Long’s greatest works. Li Xunhuan returns to the Central Plains after years of self-imposed exile and becomes entangled in the affairs of the jianghu.

The central plot involves the Money Gang (金钱帮), a powerful criminal organisation led by Shangguan Jinhong (上官金虹), who seeks to dominate the martial world. Li Xunhuan must confront Shangguan Jinhong while also dealing with the emotional wreckage of his past.

Border Town Wanderer (边城浪子)

The sequel series follows Fu Hongxue (傅红雪) and Ye Kai (叶开), two young martial artists whose lives are shaped by Li Xunhuan’s legacy. Ye Kai is revealed to be Li Xunhuan’s disciple, and the flying dagger technique is passed on to a new generation.

Relationships

Lin Shiyin (林诗音)

Li Xunhuan’s cousin and the love of his life. Their relationship is the emotional core of the series — a tragedy of good intentions and terrible execution. Li Xunhuan’s decision to sacrifice their happiness for his sworn brother’s is both noble and profoundly misguided, and the consequences haunt both of them for the rest of their lives.

Long Xiaoyun (龙啸云)

Li Xunhuan’s sworn brother, whose love for Lin Shiyin triggers the central tragedy. Long Xiaoyun is not a villain — he genuinely loves Lin Shiyin and is a respectable man. But the circumstances of their marriage, born of Li Xunhuan’s manipulation, create an underlying tension that poisons their brotherhood.

A Fei (阿飞)

A young, naive swordsman who becomes Li Xunhuan’s closest friend and protégé. Their relationship is one of mutual growth — Li Xunhuan teaches A Fei about the complexities of the jianghu, while A Fei’s straightforward honesty reminds Li Xunhuan of the values he has lost.

Lin Xian’er (林仙儿)

One of the great villains of the series. Beautiful, manipulative, and utterly ruthless, Lin Xian’er uses her beauty and intelligence to control the men around her. Her relationship with A Fei is particularly destructive, and Li Xunhuan must intervene to save his friend.

Shangguan Jinhong (上官金虹)

The primary antagonist of the first novel. Leader of the Money Gang and possessor of the “Ring of Love” (多情环), Shangguan Jinhong is a formidable martial artist and a ruthless criminal. His final confrontation with Li Xunhuan is one of the most dramatic duels in Gu Long’s fiction.

Legacy

Li Xunhuan is one of Gu Long’s most beloved characters and arguably the most tragic hero in Chinese wuxia fiction. His story — a man whose nobility destroys his own happiness — resonates deeply with readers.

The character has been adapted numerous times for television and film, with various actors playing the role across decades of adaptations.
