Shangguan Jinhong

Shangguan Jinhong

Shangguan Jinhong (Chinese: 上官金虹, pinyin: Shàngguān Jīnhóng) is the primary antagonist of Gu Long’s Flying Daggers of Xiao Li series. He is the leader of the Money Gang (金钱帮, Jīnqián Bāng), a powerful criminal organisation that seeks to dominate the martial world through wealth, intimidation, and force.

Shangguan Jinhong is one of the most formidable villains in Gu Long’s fiction — a man whose ambition is matched only by his martial skill. He is not a one-dimensional evil; rather, he is a complex character whose obsession with power ultimately becomes his undoing.

Appearance and personality

Shangguan Jinhong is described as a commanding, imposing figure. He carries himself with the confidence of someone who has never been defeated. His eyes are sharp and calculating, missing nothing, and his voice carries the authority of a man who is accustomed to being obeyed.

He is ambitious, ruthless, and intelligent. Unlike many wuxia villains who are driven by simple greed or malice, Shangguan Jinhong is driven by a genuine desire for power and control. He believes that the jianghu needs a strong hand to maintain order — and that he is the only man strong enough to provide it.

His weapon is the “Ring of Love” (多情环, Duōqíng Huán) — a pair of iron rings that he uses with devastating skill. The name is deeply ironic: Shangguan Jinhong is anything but loving. The rings represent his philosophy — that love and affection are weapons to be wielded, not emotions to be felt.

The Money Gang

The Money Gang (金钱帮) is Shangguan Jinhong’s creation and the vehicle for his ambition. Built on a foundation of wealth and intimidation, the gang recruits martial artists from across the jianghu, offering them wealth and power in exchange for absolute loyalty.

Under Shangguan Jinhong’s leadership, the Money Gang becomes one of the most powerful organisations in the martial world. Its members are skilled, disciplined, and ruthless — a reflection of their leader’s values.

The gang’s rise threatens the established order of the jianghu, drawing the attention of Li Xunhuan and setting in motion the central conflict of the series.

Martial arts

Shangguan Jinhong is one of the most powerful martial artists in Gu Long’s universe:

  • Ring of Love (多情环): His signature weapon — a pair of iron rings that he uses with devastating precision. The rings are heavy and require enormous strength to wield effectively, but in Shangguan Jinhong’s hands they are as light as feathers.
  • Internal energy: His internal cultivation is among the finest in the martial world. He possesses immense physical strength and endurance.
  • Strategic mind: Unlike many martial artists who rely solely on brute force, Shangguan Jinhong is a skilled strategist. He plans his campaigns carefully and executes them with precision.

Confrontation with Li Xunhuan

The final confrontation between Shangguan Jinhong and Li Xunhuan is one of the most dramatic duels in Gu Long’s fiction. Two of the most powerful martial artists in the jianghu face each other — Li Xunhuan with his legendary flying dagger, Shangguan Jinhong with his iron rings.

The duel is not merely a contest of skill — it is a clash of philosophies. Shangguan Jinhong believes that power and control are the highest values. Li Xunhuan believes that love, loyalty, and justice matter more. The outcome of the duel settles the question.
