Island Lord Mu (simplified: 木岛主, traditional: 木島主, pinyin: Mù Dáozhǔ, jyutping: muk6 dou2 zyu2) was one of the two lords of Heroes Island, a top martial artist who invited martial artists to the island to study the martial arts secrets inscribed on the cave walls. He achieved nirvana together with Island Lord Long after Shi Potian solved the mystery.
Biography
Discovering the martial arts secrets
Island Lord Mu and Island Lord Long discovered a series of caves on Heroes Island that contained martial arts secrets inscribed on the walls. These secrets were based on Li Bai’s poem “Ode to Gallantry” (侠客行), with each line of the poem containing a hidden martial arts technique.
Inviting martial artists to the island
Unable to solve the mystery themselves, Island Lord Mu and Island Lord Long began inviting top martial artists from the mainland to come to Heroes Island every ten years to study the secrets together. They used the Reward Good Punish Evil tokens to compel martial artists to come, eliminating entire organizations that refused.
However, their true intention was not to harm the martial artists, but to gather the best minds in the jianghu to help solve the mystery. Those who came to the island were treated well and given the opportunity to study the secrets.
Blocking Shaolin Monastery
To demonstrate their determination and power, Island Lord Mu and Island Lord Long once blocked the entrance to Shaolin Monastery for seven days and seven nights, forcing the monks to deliver a message to the abbot. This demonstrated their incredible martial arts abilities and their determination to solve the mystery.
Encounter with Shi Potian
When Shi Potian came to Heroes Island, Island Lord Mu and Island Lord Long welcomed him along with the other martial artists. They explained the history of the island and their mission to solve the martial arts mystery.
Solving the mystery
After Shi Potian solved the mystery by reading the inscriptions without understanding the words (since he was illiterate), Island Lord Mu and Island Lord Long realized that their decades-long quest had finally been completed. They had spent their entire lives trying to solve this mystery, and now that it was solved, they had achieved their goal.
Achieving nirvana
With the mystery solved and their life’s work complete, Island Lord Mu and Island Lord Long achieved nirvana together, passing away peacefully. Their passing marked the end of an era and the fulfillment of their mission.
Personality and characteristics
Dedication to martial arts
Island Lord Mu was completely dedicated to the study and advancement of martial arts. He spent decades trying to solve the mystery of the cave inscriptions, demonstrating his passion for martial arts knowledge.
Wisdom and insight
Island Lord Mu demonstrated wisdom in recognizing that solving the mystery required the collective knowledge of many martial artists. His approach of inviting top experts showed his understanding that no single person could solve such a complex puzzle.
Peaceful resolution
Despite the fear and misunderstanding surrounding Heroes Island, Island Lord Mu’s true intention was peaceful—to advance martial arts knowledge. His achievement of nirvana after solving the mystery demonstrated his spiritual attainment.
Martial arts abilities
Island Lord Mu was one of the top martial artists in the jianghu. His abilities were demonstrated when he and Island Lord Long blocked Shaolin Monastery entrance for seven days, a feat that required incredible skill and power. He was capable of throwing a thin account book with such precision and force that it demonstrated the legendary ability to “attack with flowers and harm with leaves.”
Behind the scenes
Island Lord Mu represents the theme of the pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment in Ode to Gallantry. His character demonstrates how the quest for martial arts mastery can become a lifelong obsession, and how true understanding sometimes comes from unexpected sources.
The character’s name, “Island Lord Mu” (木岛主), combines “Mu” (木), meaning “wood” or “tree,” with “Daozhu” (岛主), meaning “island lord,” suggesting a character who is grounded and stable, like a tree. Together with Island Lord Long (dragon), they represent complementary forces—the dragon representing power and the wood representing stability and growth. Their partnership demonstrates how collaboration can achieve what individual effort cannot.
