Min Rou

Min Rou

Min Rou (simplified: 闵柔, traditional: 閔柔, pinyin: Mǐn Róu, jyutping: man5 jau4) was the mistress of Xuansu Manor and mother of Shi Zhongyu and Shi Potian. Together with her husband Shi Qing, she was known as one of the “Black and White Twin Swords” (黑白双剑). She was also called the “Ice Snow Divine Sword” (冰雪神剑), a title that reflected both her martial arts prowess and her gentle, refined nature.

Biography

Early life and training

Min Rou was a disciple of the Shangqing Monastery, where she learned the Shangqing Swordplay. She was known for her gentle and refined character, which contrasted with her formidable martial arts skills.

Marriage to Shi Qing

Min Rou married Shi Qing, who was also her fellow disciple at Shangqing Monastery. Together, they became known as the “Black and White Twin Swords” because Shi Qing wielded a black sword while Min Rou wielded a white sword. They established Xuansu Manor in Jiangnan and became respected figures in the martial arts world.

The love triangle with Mei Fanggu

Before Shi Qing married Min Rou, he had been pursued by Mei Fanggu, a talented martial artist who was considered superior to Min Rou in many ways—more beautiful, more skilled in martial arts, more learned, and more accomplished in domestic arts. However, Shi Qing chose Min Rou, a decision that deeply wounded Mei Fanggu and led to tragedy.

Loss of Shi Zhongjian

When Min Rou gave birth to their second son, Shi Zhongjian, Mei Fanggu, consumed by jealousy, attacked Min Rou and her children. She killed the infant Shi Zhongjian (who may have been the original Shi Potian) and kidnapped him, leaving Min Rou devastated.

This loss had a profound impact on Min Rou. She became overly protective and indulgent of their remaining son, Shi Zhongyu, spoiling him and allowing him to develop a wicked and manipulative personality. Her excessive love and leniency contributed to Shi Zhongyu’s moral corruption.

Searching for Shi Zhongyu

When Shi Zhongyu fled the Snowy Mountain School after attempting to rape Bai Axiu, Min Rou and Shi Qing spent years searching for him throughout the jianghu. Min Rou’s maternal love drove her to find her son, even though she knew he must face justice for his crimes.

Encounter with the Changle Guild

Min Rou and Shi Qing eventually learned that their son had become the leader of the Changle Guild. They traveled to the guild headquarters, where they were received by Bei Haishi, the deputy leader.

Bei Haishi attempted to detain them, hoping to use them as leverage to force Shi Zhongyu to return. However, Min Rou and Shi Qing were skilled martial artists and were not easily subdued.

The confusion with Shi Potian

When Min Rou and Shi Qing encountered Shi Potian, who had been mistaken for Shi Zhongyu, they initially believed he was their son. However, Shi Potian’s honest and virtuous nature was completely different from Shi Zhongyu’s cunning and manipulative personality, causing confusion and heartache.

Min Rou’s maternal instincts told her that something was wrong, but she could not understand why her “son” seemed so different. Eventually, they learned that Shi Potian was likely their lost child, Shi Zhongjian, who had been raised by Mei Fanggu.

Final resolution

Min Rou eventually reconciled with both her sons. She accepted Shi Potian as her lost child and continued to care for Shi Zhongyu, despite his flaws. Her story reflected the novel’s themes about the nature of maternal love, the consequences of excessive indulgence, and the complexity of family relationships.

Personality and characteristics

Gentle and refined

Min Rou was known for her gentle, refined, and elegant nature. Despite being a skilled martial artist, she maintained a feminine and graceful demeanor. Her appearance was described as delicate and beautiful, with a gentle voice and refined manners.

Devoted mother

Min Rou’s most defining characteristic was her deep maternal love. She was devoted to her children, particularly Shi Zhongyu, whom she spoiled excessively after the loss of her second son. Her overindulgence, while born of love and grief, ultimately contributed to Shi Zhongyu’s moral corruption.

The consequences of excessive love

Min Rou’s story illustrates the consequences of excessive parental love and indulgence. Her spoiling of Shi Zhongyu, while understandable given her grief, led to his moral decay. This theme reflects the novel’s exploration of how love, when not balanced with discipline and guidance, can lead to negative outcomes.

Strength and resilience

Despite her gentle nature, Min Rou was a strong and resilient woman. She endured the loss of her child, years of searching for her son, and the pain of discovering his crimes. Her strength was demonstrated through her ability to face difficult truths and continue to love her children despite their flaws.

Martial arts abilities

Min Rou was a skilled martial artist, trained in the Shangqing Swordplay of the Shangqing Monastery. Together with Shi Qing, they formed the “Black and White Twin Swords” combination, which was renowned throughout the jianghu. Her title, “Ice Snow Divine Sword,” reflected both her martial arts prowess and her refined, elegant nature.
