Han Shizhong

Han Shizhong (simplified: 韩世忠, traditional: 韓世忠, pinyin: Hán Shìzhōng, jyutping: hon4 sai3 zung1) was a famous Song dynasty general known for his military prowess and loyalty. In The Legend of the Condor Heroes, he is mentioned as the former superior of Shangguan Jiannan, who later became the twelfth leader of the Iron Palm Keep.

Biography

Military service

Han Shizhong was one of the most renowned generals of the Song dynasty, serving during the period when the empire faced threats from the Jin dynasty in the north. His military career was characterized by loyalty to the Song court and effective leadership in various campaigns against foreign invaders.

Relationship with Yue Fei

Han Shizhong served alongside Yue Fei, another legendary Song general, during a period when both men were fighting to defend the empire against Jin dynasty forces. The execution of Yue Fei on false charges orchestrated by the corrupt minister Qin Gui marked a turning point that affected many loyal generals, including Han Shizhong.

Forced retirement

Following Yue Fei’s execution and the rise of corrupt ministers like Qin Gui, Han Shizhong was forced to retire from military service. This forced retirement left many of his officers, including Shangguan Jiannan, without official positions or purpose, leading to significant political upheaval within the Song military establishment.

Connection to Iron Palm Keep

After Han Shizhong’s forced retirement, Shangguan Jiannan, who had served as a high-ranking officer under Han Shizhong, found himself without official position. Unable to continue serving in the corrupt government, Shangguan Jiannan eventually became the leader of the Iron Palm Keep, transforming the guild into a major force in the jianghu.

Years later, when the Iron Palm Keep recovered Yue Fei’s military tactics manual, Shangguan Jiannan had it delivered to his former superior, Han Shizhong, demonstrating the continued respect and loyalty that existed between the general and his former officers.

Behind the scenes

Historical basis

Han Shizhong (1089-1151) was a real historical figure who served as one of the most important generals of the Southern Song dynasty. Alongside Yue Fei, he was one of the “Four Generals of the Restoration” who fought against the Jin dynasty. His military achievements and loyalty to the Song court made him a legendary figure in Chinese history.

Following Yue Fei’s execution, Han Shizhong did indeed retire from active military service, though the historical circumstances were more complex than the novel’s simplified account. His retirement reflected the political climate of the era, where loyal generals faced pressure from corrupt ministers at court.
