Di Yun (simplified: 狄云, traditional: 狄雲, pinyin: Dí Yún, jyutping: dik6 wan4) was the protagonist of A Deadly Secret. A simple and honest young man from rural Hunan, he was nicknamed “Kongxincai” (空心菜, Hollow Heart Vegetable) by his shimei Qi Fang due to his simple nature. After experiencing numerous hardships and betrayals, he became a skilled martial artists of his era.
Biography
Early life
Di Yun was raised by his master Qi Zhangfa in rural Hunan, alongside Qi Fang, Qi Zhangfa’s daughter. He was simple, honest, and deeply devoted to his master and shimei. His nickname “Kongxincai” reflected his straightforward, uncomplicated nature.
Betrayal and imprisonment
When Di Yun and Qi Fang traveled to Jingzhou to celebrate Wan Zhenshan’s birthday, Di Yun became entangled in a web of deception. After Qi Zhangfa seemingly “murdered” Wan Zhenshan and fled, Di Yun was framed by Wan Gui and Wan Zhenshan’s other apprentices for raping Taohong, Wan Zhenshan’s concubine. He was imprisoned in Jiangling, where his right hand fingers were severed and his collarbones were pierced.
Meeting Ding Dian
In prison, Di Yun met Ding Dian, who possessed the secret of the Liancheng Swordplay. Ding Dian taught Di Yun the Divine Light Skill (神照经), a powerful internal martial art that could even revive the dead. Through years of training, Di Yun became exceptionally skilled.
Discovery of the truth
After escaping prison, Di Yun discovered the truth about his master’s betrayal and the conspiracy surrounding the Liancheng Swordplay. He learned that Qi Zhangfa, Wan Zhenshan, and Yan Daping were all apprentices of Mei Niansheng who had betrayed their master for the swordplay manual.
Later adventures
Di Yun’s journey led him to encounter the Blood Sabre School, the Luohua Liushui (落花流水) group, and eventually to the snowy mountains where he met Shui Sheng. Through his trials, he maintained his principles and eventually became one of the most powerful martial artists in the jianghu.
Character development
Di Yun began as a simple, naive country boy but matured through his experiences. Despite the betrayals and hardships he faced, he maintained his essential goodness and integrity, making him one of Jin Yong’s most admirable protagonists.
Martial arts
Di Yun mastered the Divine Light Skill (神照经), an extremely powerful internal martial art, and the Liancheng Swordplay (连城剑法), the secret sword technique that was the source of so much conflict in the novel.
