Zhao Banshan

Zhao Banshan (simplified: 赵半山, traditional: 趙半山, pinyin: Zhào Bànshān, jyutping: ziu6 bun3 saan1), also known as the Thousand-Armed Buddha (千臂如来), was the third leader of the Red Flower Society and a master of hidden weapons and Taiji martial arts. He was a significant character in both Side Story of the Flying Fox and The Book and the Sword.

Biography

Background and Red Flower Society

Zhao Banshan was originally a disciple of the Wenzhou Wang family’s Taiji School before joining the Red Flower Society, an anti-Qing Dynasty secret society. He was known for his benevolent nature, exceptional martial arts skills, particularly in Taiji and hidden weapons, and his extensive network of contacts in the jianghu.

Encounter with Hu Fei

Zhao Banshan first met Hu Fei at the Shang Family Castle, where he helped Hu Fei escape from Lady Shang’s traps. The two quickly formed a bond and became sworn brothers. Zhao Banshan also imparted some of his Taiji martial arts knowledge to Hu Fei, subtly guiding him in his development.

Role in Side Story of the Flying Fox

Zhao Banshan played a supportive role in Hu Fei’s adventures, offering guidance and assistance. He was instrumental in informing Yuan Ziyi about Hu Fei, which led to their eventual meeting. His wisdom and experience often helped Hu Fei navigate the complexities of the jianghu.

Role in The Book and the Sword

In The Book and the Sword, Zhao Banshan is a prominent member of the Red Flower Society, serving under Chen Jialuo. He participates in many of the society’s anti-Qing activities, demonstrating his loyalty and martial prowess. His expertise in hidden weapons often proves crucial in battles against imperial forces.

Zhao Banshan was depicted as a kind, compassionate, and wise elder. He possessed a gentle demeanour but was a formidable martial artist when provoked. His character embodied the benevolent and righteous spirit of the Red Flower Society, always willing to help those in need and uphold justice.
