Wen Cangsong

Wen Cangsong

Wen Cangsong (simplified: 闻苍松, traditional: 聞蒼松, pinyin: Wén Cāngsōng, jyutping: man4 cong1 cung4) was the leader of the Wood Banner Faction (巨木旗) of the Ming Order. He specialized in siege warfare and engineering, using giant logs with iron hooks as his faction’s primary tactical weapon.

Biography

Leadership of the Wood Banner Faction

Wen Cangsong served as the leader of the Wood Banner Faction, one of the Ming Order’s Five Elements Factions. The Wood Banner Faction specialized in engineering and logistics for siege warfare and construction, providing crucial capabilities for attacking fortifications and defending positions.

Wood Banner tactics and equipment

The Wood Banner Faction used a sophisticated siege warfare system based on giant logs. Each log weighed approximately a thousand jin (千斤), requiring ten men to carry. Each log was fitted with iron hooks, and each man would pull on one hook to control the log’s trajectory.

Members wore dark green headbands (dark green cloth wrapped around their heads) as identification, and the faction used dark green banners as signals. During combat, the faction would coordinate to launch the giant logs simultaneously, using the iron hooks to control the trajectory for precise strikes.

Demonstration at the Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly

During the Slaying Lion Heroes Assembly at Shaolin Temple, Yang Xiao, the Bright Left Messenger, demonstrated the capabilities of the Five Elements Banners to the assembled heroes. When he raised a dark green flag, five hundred Wood Banner members marched into the field, each group of ten carrying a large wooden log.

At Yang Xiao’s signal, all fifty giant logs flew out from their hands simultaneously. The logs flew in various directions—some high, some low, some left, some right—but amazingly, each log struck at least one other log, with all fifty logs divided into twenty-five pairs that struck each other.

The momentum created by fifty logs, each weighing over a thousand catties, striking each other was astonishing. The continuous series of “Bang! Bang! Bang!” sounds demonstrated the devastating power of the formation. As Yang Xiao explained, if there were people standing next to the dark green flag, no matter how high they jumped or how they evaded, they would unavoidably be struck by these gigantic logs.

After the logs fell back down, the five hundred men caught the iron hooks, turned around, and rushed forward about a dozen zhang (丈), waiting for the next order before tossing the giant logs up again for a second attack.

Origins of the tactic

The Wood Banner Faction developed this flying-log formation from military tactics used in siege warfare. The tactic was originally designed to break through city gates, using wooden logs to ram down even strong city gates. The Wood Banner adapted this tactic for use in field battles, creating a formation that could devastate enemy formations through coordinated log attacks.

Role in battles

The Wood Banner Faction participated in various battles, including the Six Major Factions’ attack on Bright Peak and the battle against Yuan forces at Shaolin Temple. The faction’s giant logs were particularly effective against heavily armoured enemy troops, combining physical impact with psychological intimidation.
