Smiling Ghost (simplified: 笑脸鬼, traditional: 笑臉鬼, pinyin: Xiàoliǎnguǐ, jyutping: siu3 lim5 gwai2) was one of the “Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave”, ranked tenth among the group. He was known for his perpetual smile even in dire situations and his use of poison powder as a combat tactic.
Biography
Smiling Ghost was the tenth-ranked member of the mysterious group known as the “Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave” (西山一窟鬼), ten martial artists who adopted ghostly names and lived in the mountains. Despite being the youngest in rank, he was a capable fighter who contributed significantly to the group’s operations.
Confrontation with the Shi Family
During the confrontation with the Shi Family beast trainers, Smiling Ghost played a crucial support role. When Hanged Ghost was struggling against Shi Jiqiang, he joined the battle to assist her. However, his conventional weapons proved inadequate against Shi Jiqiang’s superior strength and bronze mace.
When his double whips were shattered, Smiling Ghost resorted to his signature poison powder technique, successfully incapacitating the powerful opponent. This underhanded but effective tactic drew criticism from Guo Xiang, who called out his dishonorable methods.
Brotherhood in peril
Later, when the Ghosts found themselves surrounded by trained beasts, Smiling Ghost demonstrated the deep loyalty characteristic of his group. When a life-saving leather cap was passed among the ghosts, he was the final recipient, but by then he was too entangled with wolves to throw it to safety, showing how the group’s brotherhood extended even to mortal peril.
Personality and traits
Physical appearance
True to his name, Smiling Ghost maintained a smile on his face even in the most dangerous situations. This characteristic smile persisted even when he was cursing or in mortal peril, creating an unsettling contrast between his facial expression and his circumstances. His perpetual grin became his defining feature and earned him his ghostly moniker.
Martial arts abilities
External combat techniques
Smiling Ghost was skilled in several combat techniques:
Weapon Skills: He wielded double whips as his primary weapons, though they proved vulnerable to superior force, as demonstrated when Shi Jiqiang’s bronze mace shattered both whips in a single strike.
Poison Techniques: His most notorious skill was the use of poison powder. He carried a supply of pale red poisonous powder that he could scatter to incapacitate opponents. This powder created a light red mist that could cause dizziness and unconsciousness, making it an effective tool for evening the odds in combat.
Combat strategies
Smiling Ghost’s fighting style emphasized strategy and opportunism rather than raw martial prowess. He would:
- Coordinate with fellow ghosts like Hanged Ghost for combined attacks
- Use poison powder when conventional weapons failed
- Employ hit-and-run tactics to avoid direct confrontation with superior opponents
- Take advantage of distractions and weakened enemies
Tactical Combat: Smiling Ghost preferred cunning over direct confrontation, often using underhanded tactics like poison to gain advantages in battle.
Relationships
Sworn siblings
Smiling Ghost was deeply loyal to his nine sworn siblings among the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave. He showed particular cooperation with Hanged Ghost, working closely with her in combat situations. As the tenth brother, he held the youngest rank but was treated as an equal by his elder siblings.
His relationship with Long Bearded Ghost demonstrated the hierarchical respect within the group, as the eldest brother ultimately chose to save Smiling Ghost’s life by giving him the protective cap during their encounter with the beast trainers.
Despite his use of underhanded tactics, Smiling Ghost maintained the group’s code of loyalty and brotherhood, always prioritizing the welfare of his sworn siblings over his own safety.
Behind the scenes
Smiling Ghost’s character adds both comic relief and moral complexity to the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave. His perpetual smile creates a memorable visual characteristic while his use of poison powder raises questions about honour in combat. His character serves as an example of how even those who employ dishonourable tactics can still maintain deep loyalty and brotherhood bonds, adding nuance to the jianghu’s moral landscape.
