Nuerhai (simplified: 努儿海, traditional: 努儿海, pinyin: Nǔ’érhǎi, jyutping: nou5 ji4 hoi2) was a member of the Western Xia First-rank Hall, serving as a trusted subordinate of Helian Tieshu, the Eastern Expedition General. He participated in operations against the Central Plains jianghu and played a significant role in several key events throughout the story.
Biography
Nuerhai served as both a warrior and advisor within the Western Xia First-rank Hall, demonstrating a dual role that combined frontline combat command with strategic responsibilities. As Helian Tieshu’s trusted subordinate, he participated in various missions targeting Central Plains martial artists and organisations. His position within the organisation granted him access to important resources, including the management of the deadly poison “Beisu Qingfeng” (悲酥清风) and its antidote.
Apricot Grove Incident
During the Apricot Grove incident, Nuerhai assisted Helian Tieshu in orchestrating the impeachment of Qiao Feng. He commanded Yipintang warriors to surround the Beggars’ Gang and attempted to continue the impeachment proceedings through figures like Bai Shijing. This event demonstrated his role in coordinating military operations and his involvement in high-level political maneuvers within the jianghu.
Diplomatic Mission to Murong Fu
After the Apricot Grove incident, Nuerhai was sent on a diplomatic mission to deliver an invitation for the Xixia Princess’s marriage selection to Murong Fu. During this encounter, Murong Fu presented him with a jade pendant that belonged to his deceased mother, demonstrating the complex political relationships between various factions in the jianghu.
Battle Outside Luoyang City
In a confrontation outside Luoyang City, Nuerhai engaged in combat with Duan Yu but was ultimately defeated by the latter’s Lingbo Steps (凌波微步, “Floating Steps”) and improved acupoint techniques. This defeat highlighted the gap between his martial abilities and those of the story’s main protagonists.
Poison Management and Betrayal
Nuerhai was responsible for safeguarding the “Beisu Qingfeng” poison and its antidote, a critical responsibility that demonstrated his trusted position within the organisation. However, after being poisoned by his own weapon, he was forced to surrender the antidote, which proved crucial for the protagonists’ survival. This event ultimately led to his decision to pledge allegiance to the protagonists’ cause.
Personality and traits
Nuerhai was described as having a temperamental and arrogant personality, traits that often led him into unfavorable situations. His overconfidence in his abilities and his dismissive attitude toward opponents frequently resulted in tactical mistakes and defeats. He was known for his “yin-yang strange” way of speaking, which added to his distinctive character. Despite these flaws, he demonstrated loyalty to his superiors and organisation, eventually pledging allegiance to the protagonists after being defeated and poisoned.
His interactions with other characters revealed a calculating nature - he often suggested strategies to Helian Tieshu but was cautious about implementing them personally, preferring to let others take the risks. This was evident when he advised capturing Wang Yuyan but then hesitated to act on his own suggestion, showing a blend of cunning and self-preservation.
Martial arts abilities
Nuerhai was proficient in Western Xia military saber techniques, which were characterized by their fierce and ruthless nature. His combat skills were sufficient to lead groups of warriors in coordinated attacks, though he ultimately proved unable to overcome the superior martial arts of the story’s protagonists. His martial abilities placed him above average practitioners but below the elite level of the Central Plains’ top martial artists.
In combat, he demonstrated tactical awareness and the ability to coordinate multiple subordinates effectively. He was skilled enough to engage in direct combat with experienced martial artists like Xu Changlao, though he ultimately proved vulnerable to superior techniques. His defeat at the hands of Duan Yu’s Six Meridians Divine Jian (六脉神剑) demonstrated the gap between his abilities and those of the story’s most skilled protagonists.
Relationships
Nuerhai’s primary relationship was with Helian Tieshu, whom he served loyally as a subordinate. His relationship with the protagonists began as adversarial but evolved into one of reluctant cooperation after his defeat and poisoning. His interactions with other characters primarily occurred in the context of military operations and political maneuvering.
Behind the scenes
As a supporting character, Nuerhai served to demonstrate the organisational structure and capabilities of the Western Xia First-rank Hall while providing opportunities for the protagonists to showcase their martial arts growth. His character arc from confident antagonist to defeated ally illustrated the complex nature of loyalty and survival in the jianghu.
Nuerhai represented the type of martial artist who, while skilled and dangerous, ultimately served as a stepping stone for the protagonists’ development. His character illustrated how overconfidence and arrogance could lead to defeat even for capable practitioners, while also showing how circumstances could force former enemies to become allies. His role in managing the “Beisu Qingfeng” poison added an element of strategic importance to his character beyond mere combat ability.
Nuerhai’s martial arts level placed him in the upper-middle tier of the jianghu, sufficient to command respect and lead military operations but not at the pinnacle of martial achievement. His Western Xia military saber techniques were effective against average practitioners but proved inadequate against the story’s most skilled protagonists. His tactical abilities and organisational skills compensated somewhat for his martial limitations, making him a valuable asset to the Western Xia First-rank Hall despite his eventual defeats.
