Jingxu (simplified: 静虚, traditional: 靜虛, pinyin: Jìngxū, jyutping: zing6 heoi1), also known as Jingxu Shitai (静虚师太), was the third-ranked Jing-generation disciple of the Emei Order. She was tragically killed by Wei Yixiao, the Green Winged Bat King, during the journey to Bright Peak when she attempted to confront him.
Biography
Training under Miejue
Jingxu was a disciple of Miejue, the third leader of the Emei Order, and rose to become the third-ranked among the Jing-generation disciples. Her position placed her below Jingxuan and Jinghui, making her one of the senior disciples within the Order’s hierarchy.
As a senior Jing-generation disciple, Jingxu participated in important Order activities and supported the Order’s leadership. Her martial arts abilities and loyalty made her a trusted member of the Order’s core group of disciples.
The journey to Bright Peak
When the Emei Order participated in the Six Major Factions’ expedition to Bright Peak, Jingxu accompanied Miejue and her fellow disciples. During the journey, the Emei Order camp was harassed by Wei Yixiao, the Green Winged Bat King, who used his exceptional qinggong abilities to attack and withdraw with impunity.
Wei Yixiao’s attacks were designed to intimidate and demoralise the Emei Order forces before they reached Bright Peak. His ability to move silently and strike quickly made him a formidable threat, and his attacks created fear and uncertainty among the Order’s disciples.
Confrontation with Wei Yixiao
When Wei Yixiao infiltrated the Emei Order camp, Jingxu attempted to confront him. She attacked him with her whisk (拂尘), a traditional monastic weapon, but Wei Yixiao’s exceptional qinggong abilities and combat skills allowed him to easily evade her attack and seize her weapon.
Despite Miejue’s attempts to intervene and stop Wei Yixiao, the Green Winged Bat King’s speed and skill were too great. He struck Jingxu with his Cold Ice Soft Palm, injecting cold yin poison into her body, and then drank her blood, killing her.
Death
Jingxu’s death was particularly gruesome: her body was found with bite marks on her neck, evidence of Wei Yixiao’s blood-drinking. Her death served as a stark demonstration of Wei Yixiao’s fearsome abilities and the threat posed by the Ming Order’s Four Guardian Kings.
Miejue was enraged by Jingxu’s death, and it further reinforced her determination to destroy the Ming Order. The incident became a symbol of the conflict between the orthodox schools and the Ming Order, with Jingxu’s death representing the cost of that conflict.
Personality & traits
Jingxu was described as somewhat careless and reckless in her actions, which may have contributed to her decision to confront Wei Yixiao directly. Her courage in attempting to face such a formidable opponent demonstrated her loyalty to the Emei Order and her willingness to defend her fellow disciples, even at great personal risk.
However, her decision to confront Wei Yixiao directly, despite his known exceptional abilities, showed a lack of tactical judgment. Her death served as a tragic reminder of the dangers of underestimating opponents and the importance of careful assessment before taking action.
Martial arts abilities
Emei Swordplay
As a senior Jing-generation disciple, Jingxu had mastered Emei Swordplay (峨嵋剑法), the signature sword technique of the Emei Order. Her proficiency in this technique would have been significant, though not at the level of the most skilled masters.
Whisk techniques
Jingxu was skilled in using a whisk (拂尘), a traditional monastic weapon and symbol of authority. She attempted to use this weapon against Wei Yixiao, but her techniques were insufficient to counter his exceptional qinggong abilities and combat skills.
Overall martial arts level
Jingxu’s martial arts abilities were at a mid-level within the Emei Order. While she was a capable disciple, she was not among the Order’s most powerful practitioners. Her skills were more suited to group combat and coordination with other disciples rather than individual confrontations with top-tier opponents.
Relationships
Miejue
Jingxu was deeply loyal to Miejue, her master and the leader of the Emei Order. Her death at the hands of Wei Yixiao enraged Miejue and reinforced her hatred for the Ming Order, demonstrating the depth of their master-disciple relationship.
Fellow Jing-generation disciples
As the third-ranked among the Jing-generation disciples, Jingxu worked closely with Jingxuan, Jinghui, and other senior disciples. Her death would have been a significant loss to the Order and a source of grief for her fellow disciples.
Wei Yixiao
Jingxu’s relationship with Wei Yixiao was one of enmity, culminating in her death at his hands. Her attempt to confront him demonstrated her courage and loyalty to the Emei Order, but also her underestimation of his abilities.
Behind the scenes
Jingxu’s character serves several narrative functions in the novel. Her death at the hands of Wei Yixiao demonstrates the fearsome nature of the Ming Order’s Four Guardian Kings and establishes the threat level that the orthodox schools face. It also serves to deepen Miejue’s hatred for the Ming Order and provides motivation for her aggressive actions during the attack on Bright Peak.
Her death also highlights the tragic cost of the conflict between the orthodox schools and the Ming Order. While major characters may survive dangerous encounters, supporting characters like Jingxu pay the ultimate price, demonstrating that the jianghu’s conflicts have real consequences.
Jingxu’s character represents the type of disciple who is loyal and courageous but may lack the tactical judgment or martial arts abilities necessary to survive in the most dangerous situations. Her death serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of careful assessment and the dangers of underestimating opponents.
The manner of her death—being killed by Wei Yixiao’s blood-drinking—also serves to establish Wei Yixiao’s fearsome reputation and the psychological impact of his attacks on the orthodox schools. Her death becomes a symbol of the Ming Order’s threat and the need for the orthodox schools to unite against it.
