Hongyun Daoren

Hongyun Daoren

Hongyun Daoren (Chinese: 红云道人, pinyin: Hóngyún Dàorén; literally “Red Cloud Taoist Priest”) is a Wudang sect Taoist priest in Liang Yusheng’s Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan (七剑下天山). Like his fellow Wudang priest Baishi Daoren (白石道人), Hongyun Daoren represents the orthodox martial values of the Wudang sect and its commitment to justice and righteousness in the jianghu.

Background

Hongyun Daoren is a Taoist priest of the Wudang sect, trained in the martial arts and spiritual traditions that have made Wudang one of the most revered institutions in Chinese martial arts history. The Wudang sect, based on Mount Wudang in Hubei province, was founded by the legendary Taoist master Zhang Sanfeng (张三丰), who is credited with developing the internal martial arts that define the Wudang tradition.

As a senior member of the Wudang sect, Hongyun Daoren has spent decades studying and practising both the martial and philosophical aspects of Taoism. His expertise encompasses Wudang sword techniques, internal cultivation, and the deep philosophical teachings of the Dao De Jing and other Taoist texts.

Appearance and personality

Hongyun Daoren’s name, “Red Cloud” (红云), evokes the image of a Taoist immortal riding the clouds — a poetic and powerful symbol that reflects both his martial prowess and his spiritual attainment. He is described as a distinguished and imposing figure, with the bearing of someone who has achieved a high level of both martial and spiritual cultivation.

His personality is characterised by righteousness, determination, and a strong sense of moral duty. Unlike the more contemplative Baishi Daoren, Hongyun Daoren is a man of action — he is prepared to step into conflict when the situation demands it and does not hesitate to use his martial skills in the service of justice.

He is fiercely loyal to the principles of the Wudang sect and to the broader cause of the orthodox martial world. He views the Qing dynasty’s oppression of the Chinese people as a moral wrong that must be opposed, and he is prepared to risk his life in that opposition.

Martial arts

Hongyun Daoren is a highly skilled martial artist trained in the Wudang tradition:

  • Wudang sword technique: Hongyun Daoren has mastered the Wudang sword techniques, which are renowned for their fluid, circular movements and emphasis on using softness to overcome hardness. His swordplay is both elegant and deadly, capable of defeating opponents through skill rather than brute force.
  • Internal energy (Neigong): His internal cultivation is among the finest of the Wudang priests. His Neigong is described as powerful and well-controlled, giving him exceptional combat stamina and the ability to deliver devastating strikes when necessary.
  • Taoist techniques: As a senior Wudang priest, Hongyun Daoren may possess knowledge of specialised Taoist techniques, including acupoint manipulation, pressure point strikes, and other advanced martial arts skills associated with the Wudang tradition.

Role in the story

Hongyun Daoren serves as a representative of the orthodox martial world in Qi Jian Xia Tian Shan. His presence in the story connects the Tianshan narrative to the broader tradition of orthodox martial arts and provides a link between the Wudang sect and the Tianshan school.

He may serve as an adviser, a combatant, or an ally to the Seven Swords in their campaigns against the Qing forces. His martial skills and moral authority make him a valuable participant in the conflicts that drive the plot.

His relationship with Baishi Daoren provides an interesting dynamic within the Wudang sect — two priests who share the same training and values but may differ in their approaches to the challenges they face. This diversity of approach within a single institution adds depth to the portrayal of the Wudang sect and illustrates the complexity of the orthodox martial world.

Relationships

  • Baishi Daoren (白石道人): His fellow Wudang priest. They share the same training and values but may differ in their personalities and approaches.
  • Ling Weifeng (凌未风): He respects the leader of the Seven Swords and supports the Tianshan cause.
  • Chaoyin Heshang (超音和尚): A Buddhist monk ally, representing the traditional alliance between Buddhist and Taoist schools.
