The Guanwa Palace (simplified: 馆娃宫, traditional: 館娃宫, pinyin: Guǎnwá Gōng, jyutping: gun2 waa4 gung1), also known as the Palace of Beautiful Women, was a palace built by King Fuchai of Wu (夫差) for Xi Shi (西施) in the State of Wu. The palace served as Xi Shi’s residence during her time in Wu and was the site of significant events at the Wu court.

Geography

The Guanwa Palace was located in the State of Wu, in what is now Jiangsu Province. The palace’s location within Wu territory made it an important structure in the state’s capital or royal complex, serving as a residence for Xi Shi during her time in Wu.

The palace’s position in the Wu capital made it a center of court life and a symbol of King Fuchai’s devotion to Xi Shi.

Historical significance

Built for Xi Shi

The Guanwa Palace was built specifically for Xi Shi, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, who was sent to Wu as part of Yue’s strategy to weaken the state. King Fuchai built the palace to house Xi Shi and demonstrate his devotion to her.

The palace’s name, “Guanwa Palace” or “Palace of Beautiful Women,” reflected its purpose as a residence for Xi Shi and other beautiful women in the Wu court.

The long corridor

According to legend, King Fuchai built a long corridor in the Guanwa Palace specifically to better listen to the music of Xi Shi’s footsteps. This detail demonstrated the king’s obsession with Xi Shi and his willingness to construct elaborate structures for her pleasure.

Site of reunion

The Guanwa Palace was the site where Fan Li and Xi Shi were reunited after Yue’s victory over Wu. Fan Li led a thousand swordsmen into the palace to rescue Xi Shi, and their reunion took place within its walls.

Behind the scenes

The Guanwa Palace is a real historical location associated with Xi Shi’s story. In Sword of the Yue Maiden, the palace serves as an important setting, illustrating the relationship between King Fuchai and Xi Shi and providing the location for key events in the novel.

The palace’s prominence in the novel helps establish the historical and cultural context of Xi Shi’s story, showing how her presence in Wu was marked by luxury and attention, even as she served Yue’s strategic interests.
