Fearsome Ghost (simplified: 煞神鬼, traditional: 煞神鬼, pinyin: Shàshénguǐ, jyutping: saat3 san4 gwai2) was one of the “Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave”, known for his ruthless reputation and multiple wives. Despite his fearsome nickname, he showed loyalty to his sworn siblings and could be reasoned with by stronger martial artists.
Biography
Fearsome Ghost was a member of the mysterious group known as the “Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave” (西山一窟鬼), ten martial artists who adopted ghostly names and lived in the mountains. He earned his nickname through his reputation as a ruthless killer who “never blinked when killing” (杀人不眨眼).
Encounter with Yang Guo
Fearsome Ghost’s most significant story involvement came during the encounter with Yang Guo. When Yang Guo intervened in a conflict between the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave and the Shi Family beast trainers, Fearsome Ghost was among those who initially considered fighting the Divine Condor Hero.
However, after Yang Guo demonstrated his overwhelming martial prowess with a powerful whistle that shook Fearsome Ghost to his core, he quickly recognized the futility of resistance. Along with his sworn siblings, he submitted to Yang Guo’s authority and agreed to follow his instructions.
Reform and character development
Yang Guo specifically addressed Fearsome Ghost’s treatment of his wives, initially ordering him to send his four concubines away. However, when Yang Guo reconsidered and realized that forcing the women to leave might hurt their feelings if they genuinely wished to stay, he modified his command. Fearsome Ghost agreed to treat his wives better and abandoned his plans to take additional concubines.
Personality and traits
Personality and traits
Fearsome Ghost lived up to his name with a ruthless and somewhat callous personality, particularly in his treatment of women. He was known to have multiple wives and concubines, treating them as disposable when he grew tired of them. His attitude toward marriage was casual and self-serving, believing that men should naturally have “three wives and four concubines.”
However, beneath his harsh exterior, he possessed genuine loyalty to his sworn siblings among the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave. When confronted by superior martial artists like Yang Guo, he showed the ability to recognize his limitations and submit to authority, demonstrating pragmatic wisdom rather than blind stubbornness.
Martial arts abilities
Weapons mastery
Fearsome Ghost was skilled with a dagger, which he kept at his waist. His fighting style was presumably direct and lethal, befitting his reputation as a killer. However, his martial arts skills were not among the highest level, as evidenced by his quick submission when faced with Yang Guo’s superior abilities.
Relationships
Family relationships
Fearsome Ghost maintained complex relationships with his multiple wives. While his initial attitude was callous and dismissive, treating them as temporary diversions, there were indications that some of his wives genuinely cared for him and he for them, despite his rough exterior.
Sworn siblings
His relationship with his sworn siblings in the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave was built on mutual loyalty and brotherhood. He showed particular respect for Long Bearded Ghost as the eldest brother and was willing to defer to the group’s collective decisions.
Mentorship
His encounter with Yang Guo marked a turning point in his character, as he learnt to show more respect for others and curb his more excessive behaviors under the guidance of a superior moral authority.
Behind the scenes
Fearsome Ghost’s character demonstrates the theme of redemption and the influence of superior martial artists in reforming others. His transformation under Yang Guo’s guidance shows how even ruthless characters can change when confronted with overwhelming power combined with moral authority. His character adds moral complexity to the Ghosts of the Western Mountain Cave, showing that even those with fearsome reputations can possess loyalty and the capacity for improvement.
