Duan Yanqing (simplified: 段延庆, traditional: 段延慶, pinyin: Duàn Yánqìng, jyutping: dyun6 jin4 hing3), also known as the Leader of the Four Evils and the Overflowing Evil, was known for his martial arts abilities and his connection to the Duan family of Dali. His character represents the consequences of political ambition and the complex nature of good and evil in the jianghu.

Biography

Early life and royal background

Duan Yanqing was born into the royal family of the Dali Kingdom, inheriting the position of Crown Prince and the responsibilities that came with it. From an early age, he was trained in the kingdom’s martial arts traditions, particularly the One Yang Finger technique, which was a signature skill of the Duan family.

His royal upbringing gave him access to the best education and training available, creating a character who was both politically sophisticated and martially skilled. However, his privileged position also created expectations and ambitions that would influence his later development.

Political downfall and exile

Duan Yanqing’s life changed dramatically when he was overthrown and exiled from the Dali court. This political downfall was the result of various political machinations and power struggles within the kingdom, leaving him without his royal position and access to the resources he had once enjoyed.

His exile forced him to develop his martial arts abilities to survive in the dangerous world of the jianghu, where his royal background was both an asset and a liability. This period of his life shaped his character and his approach to various situations.

The encounter with Dao Baifeng

One of the most significant events in Duan Yanqing’s life was his encounter with Dao Baifeng under the Bodhi tree outside Tianlong Temple. This encounter occurred during a period when Duan Yanqing was at his lowest point—he was severely injured, his face was disfigured with a long scar, his legs were broken, and he was barely recognizable as a human being.

The encounter was motivated by Dao Baifeng’s desire for revenge against her unfaithful husband Duan Zhengchun. By sleeping with someone as lowly and disfigured as Duan Yanqing appeared to be, she was making a statement about her husband’s worth and her own desperation.

This tryst resulted in the birth of Duan Yu, though Duan Yu was raised believing Duan Zhengchun was his father. The truth about Duan Yu’s parentage would remain hidden for many years, creating a complex web of relationships and misunderstandings.

First of the Four Evils

As a result of his political downfall and his experiences in the jianghu, Duan Yanqing eventually became one of the Four Evils, a group of notorious martial artists known for their cruel methods and willingness to use any means necessary to achieve their goals.

His position as the First of the Four Evils demonstrated his martial abilities and his willingness to engage in various criminal activities. This transformation showed how political failure could lead to moral corruption and how individuals could become trapped in cycles of violence and revenge.

Duan Yanqing was First of the Four Evils, making him the leader of one of the most notorious groups in the jianghu. His leadership was characterized by his intelligence, strategic thinking, and his ability to coordinate the actions of his subordinates.

Quest for the throne

Duan Yanqing’s primary life goal was to reclaim the Dali throne that he believed was rightfully his. His strategy involved capturing Duan Zhengchun and forcing him to abdicate, then eliminating Duan Yu to ensure there were no other legitimate heirs.

Duan Yanqing formed an alliance with Murong Fu, who promised to help him capture Duan Yu in exchange for support in his own quest to restore the Yan Kingdom. This alliance demonstrated Duan Yanqing’s willingness to work with others to achieve his goals.

Confrontation with Duan Yu

The most significant confrontation between Duan Yanqing and Duan Yu occurred when Duan Yanqing was about to kill Duan Yu. At this critical moment, Dao Baifeng revealed the truth about Duan Yu’s parentage by reciting the four lines that described their encounter: “Outside Tianlong Temple, under the Bodhi tree, the beggar was filthy, the Guanyin had long hair”.

This revelation shocked everyone present, as it meant that Duan Yu was not Duan Zhengchun’s son, but rather the son of the notorious Overflowing Evil.

When Duan Yanqing heard these words and saw Dao Baifeng’s expression, he immediately recognized her as the woman he had encountered under the Bodhi tree. This recognition was a moment of profound revelation that would change the course of his life.

The abandonment of revenge

With the revelation of Duan Yu’s parentage, Duan Yanqing’s primary motivation for seeking revenge against the Dali royal family became irrelevant. He realized that his son was now the legitimate heir to the throne, making his own quest for power unnecessary.

This realization allowed Duan Yanqing to let go of his hatred and focus on his relationship with his son. It was a moment of profound personal growth and redemption.

Personality and traits

Ambitious and driven

Duan Yanqing’s most defining characteristic was his overwhelming ambition to regain his royal position and to restore his family’s power in Dali. This ambition drove many of his actions and created conflicts with other characters throughout the novel.

His drive for restoration was not entirely negative; it demonstrated his dedication and his unwillingness to accept defeat. However, his single-minded focus sometimes led him to compromise his principles and engage in actions that were morally questionable.

Complex moral nature

Duan Yanqing’s character was marked by significant moral complexity, as he was capable of both great cruelty and genuine concern for certain individuals. His relationship with his son Duan Yu demonstrated that he was not entirely without positive qualities.

This moral complexity showed how even individuals who had engaged in various evil acts could still possess genuine emotions and concerns, and how the line between good and evil was often more complex than it appeared.

Martial arts abilities

Despite his political failures, Duan Yanqing remained a highly skilled martial artist who had mastered the One Yang Finger technique. His martial abilities were complemented by his political skills and his understanding of various social situations.

Duan Yanqing demonstrated his martial arts abilities in several battles against multiple opponents. His ability to fight against four or five skilled martial artists simultaneously while maintaining the upper hand showed his exceptional skills.

One of Duan Yanqing’s most impressive displays of martial arts occurred during his confrontation with Murong Fu and his four retainers. Despite being outnumbered five to one, Duan Yanqing was able to hold his own and even gain the upper hand.

This battle demonstrated Duan Yanqing’s superior martial arts abilities and his ability to adapt to different fighting styles and techniques. His victory in this battle earned him the respect and fear of his opponents.

One Yang Finger

Duan Yanqing was a master of the One Yang Finger technique, which was the signature martial art of the Dali royal family. His mastery of this technique was so profound that even Duan Zhengming, the current emperor of Dali, acknowledged that his own skills were inferior to Duan Yanqing’s.

The One Yang Finger technique allowed Duan Yanqing to channel his neili through his fingers, creating devastating attacks that could penetrate even the strongest defenses. His proficiency with this technique made him one of the most formidable martial artists in the story.

Iron staff techniques

Duan Yanqing’s primary weapon was a pair of iron staffs (铁杖), which he used with devastating effectiveness. His staff techniques were characterized by their power and precision, allowing him to fight multiple opponents simultaneously while maintaining the upper hand.

His ability to use the iron staffs to their full potential demonstrated his mastery of both external and internal martial arts. He could channel his neili through the staffs, making them as effective as any sword or spear.

Qi cultivation

Duan Yanqing possessed extremely powerful zhenqi that allowed him to overcome physical disabilities and maintain his martial arts abilities despite his injuries. His neili was so strong that he could use ordinary objects like wooden staffs to achieve the same destructive power as metal weapons.

This level of internal cultivation was the result of years of dedicated training and his natural talent for martial arts. It was this neili that allowed him to remain a formidable opponent despite his physical limitations.

Relationships

Duan Yu

Duan Yanqing initially viewed Duan Yu as a rival to the Dali throne, that he believed was his birthright, as Duan Zhengchun’s sole heir. He even plotted to use Duan Yu as a means to force Duan Zhengchun to surrender the throne.

After learning that Duan Yu was his son, Duan Yanqing abandoned his quest for revenge and power. He realized that his son’s happiness and well-being were more important than his own ambitions.

Duan Zhengchun

Duan Yanqing’s relationship with his brother Duan Zhengchun was complicated by their different political positions and their competition for power within the Dali court. Their relationship demonstrated the complex dynamics of royal family politics and the consequences of political ambition.

The Four Evils

As the First of the Four Evils, Duan Yanqing maintained various relationships with other members of this notorious group. His leadership of the Four Evils demonstrated his ability to organize and coordinate various criminal activities while maintaining his position of authority.

However, the depth of their relations was exposed when Yue Laosan the Third Evil wanted to free Duan Yu. Fearful of Duan Yu’s powerful Six Meridians Divine Jian, Duan Yanqing was ruthless enough to slay the Third Evil to protect his own interests.
