Zhuo Yihang (Chinese: 卓一航, pinyin: Zhuō Yīháng) is the male protagonist of Liang Yusheng’s Bai Fa Mo Nu Zhuan (白发魔女传). He is a disciple of the Wudang sect whose love for the outlaw warrior Lian Nishang (练霓裳) is destroyed by the conflict between his personal feelings and his duty to his sect.
Early life
Zhuo Yihang was born into a respectable family and received a thorough classical education, studying Confucian texts, history, and literature from a young age. His intelligence and moral earnestness marked him out early as a promising young man.
As a youth, he was accepted into the Wudang sect, one of the most prestigious martial arts schools in the jianghu. His combination of scholarly learning and martial aptitude made him the favoured disciple of the Wudang elders, who saw in him the future leader of the sect. He was groomed for the position of sect heir, expected to embody the values of justice, righteousness, and discipline that Wudang represented.
This upbringing instilled in Zhuo Yihang a deep sense of duty and a genuine belief in the moral authority of his sect. But it also created the internal conflict that would define his life: when his love for Lian Nishang placed him at odds with the institution he had been raised to lead, he found himself torn between two irreconcilable loyalties.
Appearance and personality
Zhuo Yihang is handsome, well-educated, and respected within the Wudang sect. He is a man of integrity who genuinely believes in the values of his sect — justice, righteousness, and the protection of the innocent. However, he is also constrained by the rigid codes of his institution, which ultimately prevent him from choosing love over duty.
His central weakness is not malice but indecision. When forced to choose between Lian Nishang and the Wudang sect, he cannot fully commit to either. This inability to act decisively — to stand up for his love against institutional pressure — is what ultimately destroys both his happiness and Lian Nishang’s trust in him.
Martial arts
Zhuo Yihang is a highly skilled martial artist trained in the orthodox Wudang tradition:
- Wudang swordsmanship: He has mastered the Wudang sword techniques, which are characterised by their fluid, circular movements and emphasis on redirecting an opponent’s force rather than meeting it head-on. His sword technique is elegant and disciplined, reflecting his scholarly temperament.
- Internal energy (Neigong): His internal cultivation, developed through years of Wudang training, is among the finest of his generation. He possesses strong defensive capabilities and sustained stamina in combat.
- Tactical thinking: Unlike many martial artists who rely on brute force, Zhuo Yihang’s scholarly background gives him a strategic mind. He is skilled at analysing opponents’ techniques and finding weaknesses in their fighting style.
Despite his considerable skills, Zhuo Yihang is not among the most powerful fighters in Liang Yusheng’s universe. When confronted with truly exceptional martial artists like Lian Nishang at the height of her fury, he is outmatched — a fact that underscores the symbolic weight of his inability to stand up for her.
Relationship with Lian Nishang
Zhuo Yihang and Lian Nishang meet by chance and fall deeply in love. Their relationship crosses the boundaries between the orthodox martial world and the outlaw community — a transgression that neither society nor their respective communities can accept.
The tragic climax occurs on Wudang Mountain, where Lian Nishang comes to see Zhuo Yihang. The Wudang elders attempt to expel her, and in the ensuing confrontation, Zhuo Yihang — under pressure from his sect — draws his sword against her. Though he does not intend to harm her, the act of betrayal is enough to cause Lian Nishang’s hair to turn white overnight.

Legacy
Zhuo Yihang is one of the most debated characters in Chinese wuxia fiction. Some readers see him as a tragic hero trapped by circumstances beyond his control; others see him as a coward whose weakness destroyed the woman he loved. This ambiguity is intentional — Liang Yusheng uses Zhuo Yihang to explore the tension between individual desire and institutional duty.
His character has resonated with readers precisely because he is not a clear-cut villain or hero. He is a fundamentally decent man whose inability to transcend the constraints of his upbringing leads to tragedy — a far more realistic and psychologically complex portrait than the typical wuxia protagonist.
