Zhang Dafu

Zhang Dafu (simplified: 章达夫, traditional: 章達夫, pinyin: Zhāng Dáfū, jyutping: zoeng1 daat6 fu1) was the lord of Mysterious Island (无名岛), one of the Seventy-Two Islands that formed part of the Alliance of the Thirty-Six Caves and Seventy-Two Islands. Like all members of the alliance, he was controlled by the Lingjiu Palace through the Mark of Life and Death.

Biography

Leadership of Mysterious Island

Zhang Dafu served as the lord of Mysterious Island, one of the seventy-two islands that were part of the Alliance of the Thirty-Six Caves and Seventy-Two Islands. As a lord, he would have been responsible for managing the affairs of his island and its inhabitants, while also being forced to pay tribute to the Lingjiu Palace.

Control by the Mark of Life and Death

Like all leaders of the thirty-six caves and seventy-two islands, Zhang Dafu was controlled by the Mark of Life and Death, which was administered by Tianshan Child Granny of the Lingjiu Palace. This control method forced him and his organisation to regularly pay tribute and remain subservient to the palace’s directives.

The Mark of Life and Death caused extreme pain to those who failed to complete assigned tasks or attempted to rebel, creating a powerful incentive for obedience but also placing tremendous psychological and physical pressure on those who were controlled.

Participation in the rebellion attempt

Zhang Dafu would have participated in the alliance’s attempt to rebel against the Lingjiu Palace’s control, which was organised by Wu Laoda during Tianshan Child Granny’s third rejuvenation cycle when her powers were temporarily lost. The rebellion took the form of a secret meeting at Piaomiao Peak on the second day of the fifth month in 1093.

The rebellion failed when Xuzhu rescued Tianshan Child Granny, and the alliance members were forced to continue their subservience to the Lingjiu Palace until Xuzhu became the new master and removed the Mark of Life and Death control.

Personality and traits

As a lord of one of the Seventy-Two Islands, Zhang Dafu would have demonstrated leadership abilities and martial arts skills sufficient to maintain control of his island. However, his autonomy was severely limited by the Mark of Life and Death, which forced him to operate under the Lingjiu Palace’s control.

Relationships

Subordination to the Lingjiu Palace

Zhang Dafu’s primary relationship was his forced subordination to the Lingjiu Palace through the Mark of Life and Death. This relationship defined his position and limited his freedom to act independently.

Alliance with other lords

Zhang Dafu was part of the Alliance of the Thirty-Six Caves and Seventy-Two Islands, which included other lords like Wu Laoda, Sang Tugong (桑土公), Duanmu Yuan (端木元), and Madam Li (黎夫人). While the alliance members were geographically dispersed, they shared the common experience of being controlled by the Lingjiu Palace.

Behind the scenes

Zhang Dafu represents one of the many subordinate lords who were controlled by the Lingjiu Palace. His character, while not extensively detailed in the source material, illustrates the widespread nature of the palace’s control and the many organisations that were forced to submit to its authority.

His participation in the rebellion attempt demonstrates how the alliance members, despite their diverse backgrounds and locations, could unite in their desire to free themselves from the Mark of Life and Death’s control.

Portrayals

Zhang Dafu has been portrayed in various adaptations of Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils.
