Zhaixingzi (simplified: 摘星子, traditional: 摘星子, pinyin: Zhāi Xīngzǐ, jyutping: zaai1 sing1 zi2) was the senior disciple of the Xingxiu Order’s zhangmen Ding Chunqiu. His name “Zhaixingzi” means “Star Picker”.
Biography
Position in Xingxiu Order
Zhaixingzi was the senior disciple (大师兄) of the Xingxiu Order under Master Ding Chunqiu. He was described as a handsome young man in his late twenties (twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old) with a tall, thin build. His complexion had a distinctive greenish-yellow tint, which may have been related to his practice of toxic martial arts techniques.
Confrontation with Xiao Feng
Zhaixingzi’s most significant appearance occurred during his confrontation with Xiao Feng. In this encounter, Xiao Feng cleverly used Azi’s palm power to injure Zhaixingzi, effectively exhausting his neili reserves. The battle left Zhaixingzi severely weakened and “half-dead,” demonstrating the vast gap between his abilities and those of truly master-level martial artists.
Cruel discipline methods
Zhaixingzi demonstrated his authority and cruel nature when he punished five junior disciples for their failure in battle. He used his signature “Heart-melting Bullets” (铄心弹) to inflict intense pain on them as a form of disciplinary action, claiming it would increase their endurance and prevent future failures.
Personality and traits
Zhaixingzi was characterized by his ruthlessness and cruelty. He showed no mercy to his enemies or even his own disciples, using pain and fear as tools for control and discipline. His methods reflected the sect’s reputation for employing cruel and underhanded tactics.
As senior disciple, Zhaixingzi maintained strict control over the sect’s junior members. He used his position to enforce discipline through harsh punishments, believing that suffering builds character and prevents future failures in battle.
Martial arts abilities
Zhaixingzi possessed considerable neili and demonstrated exceptional qinggong skills. His floating movement technique allowed him to traverse distances with remarkable grace and speed, though it was noted that while impressive, his abilities did not surpass those of certain other martial artists like Ba Tianshi or the Four Great Evils.
Zhaixingzi was known for his ruthless and cruel approach to combat. He employed a variety of techniques that emphasized psychological warfare and the infliction of pain, reflecting the Star Gathering Sect’s reputation for using underhanded and vicious methods.
Zhaixingzi’s signature weapon consisted of fire projectiles that contained toxic substances. These “Heart-melting Bullets” (铄心弹) were designed to cause intense pain and suffering rather than immediate death. He also demonstrated the ability to extinguish and reignite green flames, though this was noted to be more of a trick involving special chemical compounds rather than true neili mastery.
Relationships
Master-disciple relationship
Zhaixingzi served as Ding Chunqiu’s most senior disciple, learning the sect’s techniques and philosophy directly from the master. This relationship granted him significant authority within the faction and access to advanced martial arts knowledge.
Authority over junior disciples
Zhaixingzi exercised authority over the other disciples, often using harsh methods to maintain discipline and ensure their loyalty to the sect’s methods and goals. His cruel disciplinary methods reflected the sect’s ruthless approach to maintaining order.
Behind the scenes
Character significance
Zhaixingzi represented the darker side of martial arts practice, where techniques were developed not for self-improvement or protection, but for inflicting pain and maintaining control through fear. His defeat at the hands of Xiao Feng demonstrated the limitations of such an approach when faced with truly skilled and principled opponents.
Literary function
Zhaixingzi’s character served as a foil to demonstrate the contrast between honorable martial arts practice and the cruel methods employed by some sects. His defeat highlighted the superiority of righteous martial arts over cruel and underhanded techniques.
