Wu Gangfeng (simplified: 武罡风, traditional: 武罡風, pinyin: Wǔ Gāngfēng) was the fifth of Huang Yaoshi’s “wind” disciples on Peach Blossom Island. He was expelled from the island after the theft of the Nine Yin Manual and died from his injuries.
Biography
When Chen Xuanfeng and Mei Chaofeng stole the Nine Yin Manual from Peach Blossom Island, Huang Yaoshi punished his remaining disciples. Wu Gangfeng, along with Qu Lingfeng and Lu Chengfeng, had his leg tendons severed and was expelled from the island.
Wu Gangfeng died from his injuries. When Huang Yaoshi reunited with Lu Chengfeng, he acknowledged that both Qu Lingfeng and Wu Gangfeng were beyond recall.

Relationships
Wu Gangfeng was a loyal disciple of Huang Yaoshi, the East Heretic. He was the fifth of Huang Yaoshi’s six “wind” disciples, alongside Qu Lingfeng, Lu Chengfeng, Feng Mofeng, Chen Xuanfeng, and Mei Chaofeng. His relationship with his master was marked by loyalty, though it ended tragically when he was expelled from Peach Blossom Island along with the other remaining disciples after the theft of the Nine Yin Manual.
Behind the scenes
The Third Edition of Jin Yong’s novels changed his name from Wu Mianfeng (武眠风) to Wu Gangfeng (武罡风), likely to emphasise his connection to the “罡” (astral) winds that underpin Huang Yaoshi’s formation theory. The character “罡” refers to the four astral winds of Chinese cosmology, which aligns with Huang Yaoshi’s expertise in formation arrays and mystical arts.
